Insta-Critic: Vera Wang Has a Black and White Ball

Everyone knows Vera Wang can do black-tie. Today, at her FW15 presentation, she showed she’s also the master of a more youthful look, heavy on that timeless black-and-white mix. Wang sent out models in over-sized menswear blazers and chunky fisherman-knit sweaters over abbreviated hemlines. Plenty of pockets kept things relaxed–as did those boots: paired with everything from latticework evening gowns to 60s-inspired mini-dresses, the ubiquitous white-soled rubber boot proved a surprisingly versatile footwear option for fall.

10 Times Katy Perry Was the Coolest Girl at the Party

Photo: David X Prutting/BFAnyc.com

She’s may have the eye of the tiger, but she also has the eye of every partygoer when she walks in. Katy Perry is just a fun girl; she changes the color of her hair as often as Justin and Selena break up — a lot — she sings about kissing girls, and jumps off bars in college towns. She’s the friend that always knows how to have a good time yet can uplift you and let you know you’re a firework. That’s why she’s always the coolest girl at the party.

Hedi Slimane to Design YSL from LA

Now that it has been speculated and confirmed that former Dior Homme designer turned renowned fashion photographer Hedi Slimane will indeed succeed Stefano Pilati’s role as YSL creative director, everyone wants to know where he’ll make the magic happen. Will he stick to tradition and work out of YSL’s Parisian headquarters or will he switch the game up and design from his homebase since 2007, Los Angeles?  Ever the rebel, Slimane chose the latter.

According to British Vogue, although Slimane will maintain the design reins from his West Coast studio, "fittings will still take place in Paris and YSL ateliers will continue to work from the label’s Avenue George V offices." They also note that London-based Phoebe Philo of Céline is the only other creative director of a French fashion house to go against the grain and work elsewhere.

While Philo’s relocation definitely worked out for her (I’m pretty sure some Philophiles have physical shrines dedicated to Céline), I’m curious to see how the notoriously laidback LA will affect YSL’s European sensibility. Slimane’s first YSL collection as creative director is expected to drop this month.

On another note, Vena Cava now has a studio in LA, Vera Wang bought a home in LA, Céline is re-opening their Rodeo Drive boutique and Isabel Marant is setting up shop in West Hollywood—I suspect the grooming of a West Coast fashion capital.

Leighton Meester, Missoni’s New Face

It’s no secret that Gossip Girl cast members Blake Lively and Leighton Meester have proved themselves to be stylish on set and off. Now it seems that both ladies will be fronting major fashion campaigns next year. Lively is the new face of Chanel, while Meester is rumored to be Missoni’s new model, according to Elle UK. Meester, who currently appears in campaigns for Vera Wang fragrances and Herbal Essences, will be modeling for Missoni in a campaign launching in summer 2011.

If there’s one thing that’s certain, it’s that you know you’ll love them, xoxo.

What Would You Do With the Wedding Budget of a Princess?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of weeks, you know that Prince William is finally tying the knot with his longtime girlfriend and regular gal, Kate Middleton. After dating for seven years, William finally, as Beyoncé would say, “put a ring on it.” It’s set to be the biggest wedding of the year—perhaps decade. So what would you do if you had the endless budget of a princess? I know what I would do—spend that precious royal dough and throw the wedding of my dreams. I mean, marrying a prince is nice and all, but can you imagine the kind of shopping Kate gets to do? I’m jealin’! Here’s what I would buy if I had the budget of a princess. I would start with a couture dress designed by Elie Saab, Caroline Herrera, or Vera Wang. However, I would keep the silhouette on the sleeker side and go for a long train.

I’d have this “magnificent” $1,098,340, rectangular-cut, perfect diamond ring. A mill is a drop in the pan for big Willy. image

Of course I wouldn’t get married in anything but Christian Louboutin, like these Canonita 100 crepe-satin sandals ($995). image

Last, but not least, I’d buy a Judith Leiber Embellished Crossbody Clutch ($1495). You shouldn’t have made me wait so long, Willsies. image

For You Planners Out There: Vera Wang’s Makeup & Skincare Line, Coming Spring 2012

Vera Wang (master of pretty much everything now) is adding makeup and skincare to her empire. According to Women’s Wear Daily, the brand will launch Spring 2012 at Kohl’s, joining her Simply Vera line that has been in stores since 2006. The line already includes handbags, bedding, and fragrance. So adding makeup will be a natural step for Ms. Wang. In a press release she stated: “As part of my incredible partnership with Kohl’s, I will now be able to offer women all over America my own personal regimen for skincare and makeup. It is an easy, light, modern, and effortless approach to beauty and creativity.”

From sought-after wedding gowns to handbags and now skincare/makeup—is there anything Vera can’t do? I think not!

Where Celebs Go Out: Hugh Jackman, Parker Posey, Reshma Shetty

At the premiere of City Island:

● ANDY GARCIA – “In New York there are so many great restaurants. There’s an old one I’ve gone here for many years that I like to visit, just out of nostalgia. It’s a very good restaurant. It’s called Il Vagabondo. It has a bocce court in it. It’s just a very picturesque place; very, good food. Cipriani’s. There’s a new one called Nino’s. Scalinatella — a lot of Italian restaurants, you can tell. I always pop my head into Victor’s Cafe. And then, I’ve got to have a Gray’s Papaya hot dog here.” Any plans to visit Cuba? “Oh, I dream about visiting Cuba every day. But some people have to leave there first.” ● HUGH JACKMAN – “I’m a real junkie for Jean-Georges Vongerichten. I love his cooking. I just went to his place up in The Mark, and I was lucky enough to go to his new restaurant down at ABC Carpet and Home — all organic, every ingredient’s within an 100-mile radius. The food is just unbelievable there, so … Any special dish? Chicken. He told me his secret: brine. You got to brine your chicken.” ● VERA WANG –“I like Morimoto, and I like Bar Masa, and I love the new Mark Hotel, and Sant Ambroeus, uptown and downtown, Mr. Chow’s. I go out to eat a lot — you can tell.”

● SANDRA BERNHARD – “I love Cookshop, which is downtown. I love BLT Fish, one of my favorite restaurants. Babbo. Of course, I love 2nd Avenue Deli. I’m very into trying to eat locally, sustainably grown food. I’m doing more and more cooking at home because of my daughter. And I’ve always eaten very balanced and healthy, but, to me, it’s about really preserving the environment, as well.” ● ZOE KRAVITZ –Five Leaves in Brooklyn, in Greenpoint. Delicious.” ● PARKER POSEY – “I’m trying to give a good recommendation for something. Mary’s Fish Camp.” ● DOMINIK GARCIA-LORIDO – “Oh, wow! I’m, like, so not a club person anymore. I’m pretty much a homebody. I live in L.A., so … I like more dive bars and chill spots where you can hear good music. I don’t like really sceney places. I don’t like where you have to dress up. I’m more, have a beer and chill; watch a game. I have to give a shout-out to the guy I work for, as a waitress. I still work there. It’s a lounge in Studio City, California, called Next Door Tapas. It’s attached to an Italian restaurant, La Loggia. It’s a really chill, tapas bar in the Valley. It’s got good drinks and good food.” ● STEVEN STRAIT –The Smile on Bond Street — really, really cool place; a little coffee shop that’s got great food, great coffee; really relaxed, cool place. I grew up here, but I don’t live here anymore. I love staying at the Chelsea Hotel. It’s got so much character; really, amazing history; inspiring place. It’s really kept to its roots. The city’s expanded around it. It’s really held firm. I appreciate that.” ● RESHMA SHETTY – “My favorite restaurant, at the moment, is Jack’s Luxury Oyster Bar. I love that place. Bar-wise, the Russian Vodka Room does a mean apple martini. And they have a fabulous happy hour: $5, 4-6.” ● GRAHAM PHILLIPS – “One thing that’s been fun is that I’ve noticed is that all the best pizzerias are in Brooklyn, and I used to never really go to Brooklyn, but now that the show [The Good Wife] films in Brooklyn, I’ve been going to all these pizzerias. I have a list on my phone. Someone sent it to me. I’ve just been trying to check ’em all off my list. Joe’s Pizza, Bleecker and Carmine, unbelievable! Di Fara, Brooklyn, Avenue J — I tried that. That was unbelievable! I also tried Grimaldi’s. And they were all unbelievable. They’re all in the same genre of this authentic New York pizza, but they all have their little twist to it.”
