In an answer to the seemingly endless controversy that has followed Lindsay Lohan’s appointment as artistic director at Emmanuel Ungaro, the tabloid favorite has been fired quietly. Although she surfaced at Paris fashion week earlier this week, she was nowhere to be seen at this morning’s Ungaro presentation–one which, not surprisingly, failed to include pasties this time around. Although, to Lohan’s credit, there’s was relatively nothing to write home about regarding the collection… maybe critics were a bit harsh? Regardless, “‘she’s not involved in this collection,’ Ungaro owner Asim Adullah told WWD backstage before the show,” WWD says.
While Adullah didn’t not go so far as to say that Lilo had been let go entirely, there’s little hope that she’ll remain in any official capacity anywhere in high fashion. But, considering that Lohan has surfaced at the likes of Dior and Kenzo’s front rows, she’s not taking her pink slip lightly. But, if her pink, relatively conservative party dress for John Galliano’s Dior show was any indication, she may be trying to clean up her image. (Although, her late arrival made her miss the show itself, she successfully showed up backstage after it ended.) Not a bad idea considering even Lohan herself has said that her name “cheapens” a brand’s image.
One of the most controversial hirings in recent fashion history was Lindsay Lohan being brought on board as artistic consultant at Ungaro. The move led to the resignation of Esteban Cortazar,then designer at the high-fashion house, and countless scathing critiques come the starlet’s premiere collection presentation at fashion week this past fall. (Rumor has it Lilo’s employment may have incited the subsequent departure of Ungaro’s CEO as well.) Despite all the hubbub, it seems Halston is following suit. Sarah Jessica Parker may soon take up a similar post for that brand.
Having hit its heyday during the ’70s club era, Halston is looking to reinvigorate interest by hiring a celebrity adviser. Halston is rumored to be “courting her to become its new ambassador,” says Vogue UK. “A source close to the label claimed today that Parker may assume a creative role at the revived house.”
Granted, Parker has experience in design – her low-priced label Bitten was carried at Steve & Barry’s until it went bankrupt, but her brand made fewer waves than La Lohan’s 6126. Celebrity consultants are definitely nothing new– Chanel, for one, employs Leigh Lezark and fellow ‘it’ girls to test out products before they are finalized–but granting actresses official posts at high-fashion labels? Hasn’t the lesson of Lohan taught Halston anything?
UPDATE: WWD has confirmed that Sarah Jessica Parker will join Halston Heritage’s line; “she is expected to take an active design role, possibly even that of creative director.”
Esprit, the boat-neck, nautical print loving chain retailer is looking to attract a new clientele — specifically that of fashion savvy shoppers more loyal to outlets like H&M or Topshop. The brand “is trying to make an impact with larger, architecturally significant stores and an edgy new advertising and image campaign,” says Women’s Wear Daily. So, what exactly does ‘edgy’ entail? Cameos from Julia Restoin-Roitfeld (daughter of French Vogue‘s Carine Roitfeld who is also the face of Jil Sander’s debut fragrance) and model Daisy Lowe (Gavin Rossdale and Pearl Lowe’s scion who has starred in everything from Marc by Marc ads to DKNY).
While the choices aren’t uninformed ones, the ad campaigns themselves aren’t especially ‘edgy.’ “Lowe’s images were shot in a car graveyard outside Los Angeles to reflect the youthful spirit of the clothes. Restoin-Roitfeld was shot with a larger group of models walking through the Californian desert,” says WWD. What dead cars say about young clothes is beyond me. But hey, at least they didn’t go so far as to enlist a controversial young starlet as creative consultant for the brand. Turns out Ungaro’s choice of hiring on Lindsay Lohan has not only pissed off the fashion house’s namesake, it’s resulted in the CEO of the company quitting as well. “Mounir Moufarrige, Ungaro’s president since 2006 and the architect of a strategy that brought tabloid sensation Lindsay Lohan into the French fashion fold, has resigned,” says WWD. After the verbal beating Moufarrige has taken from both critics and the press alike, it’s no surprise. No word on what this will mean for Lohan’s floundering fashion reputation.
Max Azria is no marketing slouch. The fashion designer sits at the helm of BCBG Max Azria Group, which includes a whopping 22 brands. Among them: Max and the once defunct Hervé Léger, which Azria recently resurrected thanks to his reintroduction of last year’s ubiquitous bandage dress. Now the Tunisian designer is teaming up with one of pop culture’s biggest money makers (that is, with regard to the under-18 set): Miley Cyrus. “Azria is said to have developed a rapport with Cyrus in the course of dressing her for events and eventually became acquainted with her parents — her father, country star Billy Ray Cyrus,” says Women’s Wear Daily. So, when opportunity knocked, Azria and Cyrus answered with a new juniors line for Wal-Mart. “The trend-right collection will bow in all Wal-Mart stores and on walmart.com in early August, the sources said, adding the line will include tops, pants, graphic T-shirts and shoes, priced under $20.” In other words, expect a lot of cross-branding from the trio: “Cyrus, who will be touring at the end of the year for her new album, “Breakout,” to be released July 22, will wear BCBG Max Azria styles. Her tour will reportedly be sponsored by Wal-Mart,” says WWD.
Meanwhile, across the pond in Paris, a certain red-carpet tabloid favorite is rumored to be causing quite a stir at Ungaro. According to Page Six, “[Lindsay] Lohan is currently in Paris, talking to the house about signing on as a creative consultant, and [head designer] Esteban [Cortozar] is not happy.” The latter is reportedly so displeased with the potential partnership that he’s threatened to leave his position if Lohan comes aboard. After all, the leggings designer and spray-tan connoisseur doesn’t exactly epitomize high fashion.
