Trends Out of Pre Fall: The Big Eight from Chanel, Alexander Wang, Belstaff, and More

Only a month and a half out – cue panic – from the new and improved New York fashion week, we can’t help but wonder what designers will bestow upon us this coming season. If the pre fall collections are any indication of what’s to come, we’ll be seeing an inundation of fringe, plenty of pleats and lots of lace. Plaids and floral will be prominent pattern stories, as will the black and white pairings that we saw this past spring. Big volume will remain a big player. And Bermuda shorts will make an impressive comeback.

Dark, dramatic lace could be found all throughout the pre fall collections.  This season’s lace felt romantic, sensual and not in the least bit girly.

Reminiscent of a schoolboy uniform from private schools past, Bermuda shorts came back in a more tailored way. Rather than being oversized and slouchy they were grown up – a crisp, formal approach to the menswear trend.

BlackWhiteCompare and Contrast

Seen at: DKNY, Donna Karan, Alice & Olivia, Narciso Rodriguez

The back and white pairings that dominated spring runways came back bolder and even more graphic. The contrasting colors felt distinctly harder, tougher, and seemed to harken back to the 1960s.

Cowboy hats, boots, and fringe, oh my. Epitomized by Chanel’s show in Dallas, the cowboy trend was more apparent than ever. Fringe found itself on everything from bags to the backs of dresses and broad rimmed hats and over the knee boots.

A perennial trend, flowers bloomed bold and beautiful this fall. In pastel pink and brooding black, blooms were rendered in a dozen different ways. We loved the graphic interpretations as well as the retro inspired prints.

Plaiditude A Plaiditude

Seen at: Altuzarra, Belstaff, Rachel Comey, Thakoon

Cleaning up the grungy plaids of last fall, this season’s tartans are crisp and classic with a modern twist. Interpreted in new color combinations and shapes the plaid feels reinvigorated and new.

PleatsPleasePleats and Thanks

Seen at: ALC, Gucci, Tory Burch, Missoni

Pleated skirts in delicate swingy fabrics look simultaneously classic and fresh, especially when reinterpreted in silver metallic fabric or paired with sleek, minimal accessories.

Proving more is more. Jackets and pants in particular were given an extra dose of volume. Big, boxy structural shapes reigned supreme.

What’s in a Wallet?

Pretty much our whole lives! Everything that matters: our driver’s license, money, credit cards, pictures of loved ones. Is it me or are wallets seldom coveted/talked about? It’s kind of ironic. There’s a couple of things I neglect in my wardrobe, number one is my socks. Who cares if they match, no one’s going to see them anyway…I think. Second, is my wallet. I’ve been carrying the same black leather Michael Kors wallet for three years. It’s incredible though, zero wear-and-tear! For that reason, I haven’t been inclined to buy a new one. Also, unlike handbags, it’s a mild hassle to empty out one just to change up the look of an item no one will really see. Despite my MK wallet’s refusal to give up, I went on a hunt for a new one in a market I haven’t examined in years and saw some cute, unique options. At the very least, I figured if I don’t buy one for myself, it could make a great gift for someone else. Everyone can use a wallet! Like this Tory Burch Purple Embossed Continental Wallet, $195.

Lovely Leather: The Best Leather Jackets of the Season

Leather jackets are always what we like to call “investment pieces.” Yes, I understand that phrase doesn’t mean anything to men, but you ladies know what I’m talking about! You know you’ve just purchased an “investment piece” when you’re hiding the receipt from your significant other. Just tell your husband you went grocery shopping and the filet mignon was on sale, and that you’re doing your part to boost the economy. Then you can counter the argument with how much he spent on his watch and that 60 inch plasma TV. So if you’re going to drop some dough on a quality leather jacket, here are four unique styles you should seriously consider. With proper care, they will last for years to come -and be well worth the argument/investment.

Holiday Travel Tips From Today’s Fashion Globetrotters

Thanksgiving is mere days away, which means that this week marks the beginning of holiday travel anxiety and airport insanity. And while you may think you have the drill down pat, there’s always room for improvement—especially if it means getting to your destination without any drama. Whether you’re looking to update your packing plan or just need some motivation to get started, we’ve compiled a few useful tips from some fashion pros after the jump.

Starting with an upright roller suitcase, Rachel Zoe suggests packing methodically by “layering your belongings inside in the following order: shoes on the bottom (put socks in them to keep their shape and place them within a drawstring bag), folded jeans in the middle, and everything else—blouses, dresses, blazers—on top. Make sure these items are laid neatly flat with as few folds as possible.” Zoe also notes that over-packing is a waste of time and ultimately counter-productive: “Nothing is as un-chic as an overstuffed suitcase. Not only will it potentially cost you extra money at the airport, but it will also damage the suitcase and contents inside. If you are planning to go on a somewhat lengthy trip, I recommend shipping some of your belongings via FedEx in advance.”

Models practically live out of suitcases, so you know they have a pretty good system in place. Over at Modelinia a few of them revealed their spring backpacking tips that can also be applied year-round. “Roll up everything and you will have half a suitcase free that you didn’t have before,” notes recent Chanel catwalker Crystal Renn. Filippa Hamilton has a good tip for spontaneous purchases before a flight (because you know it happens): “I always put an extra bag inside my big bag in case I go shopping or I need to take out stuff so I don’t pay the overweight fee.” And to avoid hunger without sacrificing your diet, model and actress Mini Anden suggests, “When flying, bring your own food! I always pack a nice homemade meal with fruit and veggies. That way your stomach feels sooo much better! Airplane food is the worst!”

We all know how long the airport security check can take, so it’s great to hear that Tory Burch made a sock specifically for that moment when you have to quickly take off your shoes but want to avoid bare feet. She tells Vogue: “After walking barefoot through airport security earlier this year, I tweeted about whether to design a travel sock.” With a resounding “Yes!” from her followers, she designed a Merino-wool sock with non-slip rubber that comes with a cute pouch and clip for your luggage so you can pull the socks on during security check (or if you need to sprint across the airport to catch your flight).

Fashion’s Night Out Swag Bags

With Fashion’s Night Out just hours away, revelers are lining up invites and mapping out the most efficient party-hopping routes. Everyone looked surprisingly chic on the subway ride to work this morning, as well they should: Last year 800 retailers joined on to participate, and this year the number’s up to 1,000, with all five boroughs participating. Block parties, celebrity appearances, a good old fashion open bar fiesta-feel—there are more than a few reasons to join in the fun. The reason I’m braving the mass Manhattan hysteria is to get my hands on the limited-edition FNO designer totes that fashion houses are hawking.

FNO is offering their own signature bag for stashing purchases, but if you want something a little more stylish and more exclusive, Prada is offering 10 limited-edition signature lipstick print totes, and Tory Burch has a revamped beach bag on queue. My favorite bag du soir has to be the Missoni shoulder bag, an affordable $90 and something that I will undoubtedly use again. And if that doesn’t quench your thirst, a bottle of Missoni’s custom-designed San Pellegrino comes with each purchase of tote. Get out there and shop!
