Beauty titan Marcia Kilgore’s bath and body line Soap & Glory has been a massive hit in the UK since she first launched it back in 2006—her Righteous Butter Body Butter was voted Britain’s Best Body Butter. Now, after a short-lived initial run at Target stores in the US, the products, which combine Kilgore’s trademark humor and high quality, are finally back in the States. Kilgore also founded the hugely popular Bliss Spa, so Soap & Glory’s cheekily-named offerings will come as a welcome addition to the fans who already covet the Bliss phenomenon.
Soap & Glory is aimed at women who don’t take their toilette so seriously. As she tells the HuffingtonPost, “while beauty absolutely matters, it doesn’t matter absolutely.” To wit: Sexy Mother Pucker Lip Plump, Hand Food Hand Cream, and Glow Job Daily Radiance Moisture Lotion. “Besides there being three times more beauty-loving people in America as there are in Great Britain and that being the opportunity that it is, I’d simply love to make a big success of it in America, and spread my new brand of bubbly back where I first cut my teeth in the world of cosmetics” says Kilgore. Soap & Glory is available exclusively at Sephora.com and in stores in September.
On September 8, Fashion’s Night Out will once again transform New York into one giant block party celebrating commerce. The lineup of events has just been released on a new and improved site that allows you to navigate and plan for what could easily turn into an overwhelming haul. I’ve cherry-picked a few of the top beauty events to check out, from fun giveaways to stellar appearances by luminaries of the beauty industry. Locations and events are still being added, so make sure to double back for updates.
All Chanel Stores will be giving complementary mini-manicures with the line’s exclusive FNO Nail Colour Collection.
The NARS store on Bleecker Street will host Mr. Nars himself to introduce two products that have been exclusively created for FNO.
Maybelline will set up shop at Ganesvoort Plaza on Little West 12th Street and 9th Avenue, giving away tubes of cult-classic favorite Great Lash mascara, as well as offering mini-makeovers.
New York City’s ultimate beauty resource, Ricky’s is celebrating 20 years by serving cocktails at their 87th Street store and doing free blow outs and makeovers with a Ricky’s purchase.
Sephora’s 119 Fifth Ave. location will have DDF’s creator, Dr. Howard Sobel, in store to do consultations. From 6-11pm.
Nail polish staple Essie will team up with Teen Vogue on Bleeker Street and West 11th Street from 6-10pm to do nails with celebrity manicurist Elle Gerstein, who will give her take on tips, tricks, and trends.
Just when you thought the nail polish market was at full capacity, along comes London cult-favorite Nails Inc, which just landed in over 50 Sephora stores in the US. With 42 polish shades, the line celebrates London life with colors named after the some of the city’s lesser-known destinations: Basil Street (pale soft toffee), Chelsea Embankment (gold glitter), Devonshire Row (vibrant lilac). Nails Inc is known for its bright shades, crystal colors, and special-effects 3D glitter. But it’s not all about the shine.
The lacquers are formulated for long-lasting wear, and the brand also offers treatment products like Electric Lane Holographic Base Coat, Kensington Caviar Hand Cream, and Westminster Bridge Matte top coat. Nails Inc. creator Thea Green is a former fashion editor at Tatler, and custom blends for London runway shows for the likes of Issa and Julien Macdonald. The line is a must for nail art followers, and luckily, Green’s plan for US invasion is just getting started. “We’d love to open nail bars here,” she tells Style.com of us Yanks.
Since I turned 16, the makeup staple I have consistently used and cannot live without has been black eye liner. Above lipstick, gloss, or blush, eyeliner is the item I refuse to leave home without. (I’ve even been known to use an eye pencil to jot something down in a mad, pen-less moment.) So I know from kohl eyes. While there are many two- or three-in-one eyeliner-shadow combos out there in the world, Ultraflesh’s Black Magic Ultimate Jet Black Eyeliner Collection takes the prize. It’s a collection of five deep, dark black eyeliners in one box. Here’s the break down:
the first layer is two wet-dry pressed powder liner shades. One is in black matte, the other in black with gold shimmer. In layer two lives a smudge black gel liner and a mini pro-angle liner brush. Layer three holds two creamy pencils, one in black kohl and the other in black shimmer. I’ve never been one for a shimmery eye, but done in black and in a liner, I might just be game. These formulas contain amino acids and lecithin to give a creamy effect and long-lasting, smudge resistant wear. If this all-in-one dream doesn’t inspire you to try the cat eyes that have been featured everywhere for fall fashion (like the Lanvin look pictured here), then I don’t know what will.
Just when you thought it might be possible to get by without an iPad, along comes an app from the beauty bigwigs at Sephora. After checking out what it’s got to offer, even their spiffy website looks creaky in comparison. The three main categories are Beauty Report, Social, and Shop, and within those tabs you’ll find the usual social media and video components, as well as Beauty and the Blog, which takes viewers behind the scenes with Sephora editors, and Daily Obsessions, featuring must-have picks from the staff.
The most innovative aspect of the app is the Virtual Mirror. Here, the iPad camera acts as a mirror while users’ images are displayed side-by-side with how-to demo videos. There are endless ways to get lost in this virtual world, available only for the iPad 2.
This week, Sephora also announced the launch of Charlotte Ronson Beauty come September. The I Heart designer, who’s known for putting her friends and family in her ads and on the runway, will also be taking cues from her nearest and dearest for her beauty line. The products range from $14.00 for a heart-shaped lip gloss to $28.00 for a vintage-inspired cosmetics case. Says Ronson, “I’ve always deigned for girls who believe that less is more and I’ve stayed true to my aesthetic with this beauty collection.”
No, that wasn’t a Beth Israel-bound ambulance that almost ran you over you while crossing Irving Place. It was a Sephora Mini Cooper responding to an emergency. The beauty monolith now offers Same Day Beauty Delivery Service of their cosmetic products to NYC residents. You might greet this development with skepticism: New Yorkers are busy, but there are fifteen Sephora locations in Manhattan alone, including two within spitting distance each other in Times Square. What beauty emergency could actually require rapid-response door-to-door service? Actually, the list of potential calamities is endless:
● Foundation splatters on bathroom floor. Can’t leave apartment to get more. ● Drugstore mascara overhaul results in tarantula eyes. Time to splurge on DiorShow. ● Hair would look better today if it had feathers in it. Need Sultra Feather Hair Accents, stat. ● Tube tan gone streaky – don’t they make remover for that? ● Manicure appointment canceled. Nothing less than Sophie Robson Nail Art in Animal Print will do. ● Four year old eats NARS Lipstick. But Barbarella is the only color that goes with this jumpsuit. Just call 1-877-SEPHORA before 11am, and your goods will be dispatched same day. We’re tempted to test this out, if only to see if they take beauty-on-the-fly as seriously as we do. Perhaps we’ll order a pizza from the neighborhood joint and some makeup from Same Day Sephora Delivery and see who reaches the door first. A hot slice is lovely, but if that lip plumper doesn’t get here soon, we might not survive the day. Gentlemen, start your engines.
If you’re itching to break away from summer’s typical color palette of coral pinks and cherry reds, now’s the time to try your hand at some adventurous nail art. California company Minx’s patented digit decoration — you might recognize their Chrome collection — has a devoted celebrity following (Lady Gaga’s studded hearts, Katy Perry’s tiny images of her husband, Russell Brand). Here are a few of our favorite nail remedies, Minx and otherwise, to keep your nails interesting.
Fifi Nail Salon in NYC uses a heated nontoxic polymer, bonding the thin film of color — or whatever else you choose; diamonds, anyone? — to the nail. The Minx process takes longer then a regular manicure but there’s no drying time.
Nail Spa Sakura is known for their Minx nails, and have locations on the Upper East Side, Lower East Side, and in Japan.
If you can’t get to the salon, Sephora teamed up with OPI to create a line of DIY nail art. My faves include the cosmic stars and checkers.
Or, if you’re feeling really crafty, Sally Hansen has a nail art pen. 3D designs, animal prints, self portraits, psychedelic swirls – this could just be the best accessory this season.
