Jennifer Lopez to Star in ‘Bye Bye Birdie Live’

JLo fans, rejoice! The singer/actress is confirmed to star in NBC’s live televised production of Bye Bye Birdie next year as Rosie, the small-town girl whisked into a frenzied musical world by the Elvis-esque Conrad Birdie.

The live production is being adapted for TV by Harvey Fierstein, who wrote and is set to star in NBC’s upcoming Hairspray Live! (as Edna Turnblad, a role he originated on Broadway and won a Tony for.)

Lopez takes on the role made iconic by Chita Rivera, and says, “Broadway musicals and films fueled my childhood and ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ was one of my favorites.”

Rivera commented on Lopez’s casting to Playbillsaying, “Birdie is an amazing, joyous 50s era musical with a tremendous score and characters. It’s meant to make you feel good…couldn’t be more timely. I call it the Technicolor musical! I hope they do the ‘Shriner’s Ballet.’ Have fun, JLo. You’ll love Rosie.”

The show is set to premiere during next year’s holiday season, and comes in the wake of plans from NBC to stage a live Hairspray and a staging of A Few Good Men.

To get you even more excited, here’s JLo singing Frank Sinatra:

How Good of an Actress Is J. Lo, Really? 8 of Her Performances, Ranked From Worst to Best

Tomorrow, Jennifer Lopez and Viola Davis‘ Lila & Eve arrives in theaters, a Thelma and Louise-esque romp about two women dishing out vigilante-style justice to avenge the death of Davis’ son (or, something). The film’s already getting some pretty harsh reviews, which made us wonder if J. Lo has trouble picking the right films to work on, or if she really just needs to stop her pursuit of acting all together. Here, we looked back on some of the more popular J. Lo movies, ranked from the absolute worst to the absolute best:

GIGLI, Martin Brest

In what was probably a hollow attempt to capitalize on Bennifer-mania, this box-office bomb regularly appears on “worst films of all time” lists, and for obvious reasons. Unsympathetic characters, a convoluted plot (wanna-be gangster kidnaps a mentally challenged man, and J. Lo’s just…there for some reason, doing yoga) and a surprising lack of chemistry between Affleck and Lopez, despite being an actual couple at the time it was filmed, all coalesce in an embarrassing endeavor.

THE BOY NEXT DOOR, Rob Cohen

This stalker thriller had a lot of promise, not necessarily to be a great film, but at least to be a guilty so-bad-it’s-good pleasure. Miraculously it fell short of that dubious honor, with Jordan Hoffman of The Guardian writing, “for a would-be cult classic, this could have been much more.”

ANACONDA, Luis Llosa

This serpentine suspense movie was basically the ‘90s version of Snakes on a Plane: high-concept, horrible acting, laughable more so than horrifying. Nominated for 6 Golden Raspberry Awards (J. Lo, luckily, evaded a nomination), it’s a good thing she appeared in a much better film the same year (we’ll get to that soon.)

MAID IN MANHATTAN, Wayne Wang

Your typical rom-com with a Cinderella complex. Ranking at not-her-best-yet-not-the-worst-movie-ever, Maid in Manhattan is a feel good story about a New York hotel maid (Lopez) who’s mistaken for a socialite by a senatorial candidate (Ralph Fiennes) after trying on a wealthy woman’s dress. They have an enchanting night, fall madly in love, etc. etc. Something about this plot line is slightly offensive and stereotypical, but it was the early aughts, after all.

THE WEDDING PLANNER, Adam Shankman

This is definitely Lopez’s most comfortable territory: a light-hearted romantic comedy in the tradition of happily ever after and a handsome, hunky dude with frosted tips (Matthew McConaughey). In this movie, Lopez is a successful city wedding planner who breaks her own biggest rule to never fall in love. Let’s check a “maybe” for this RSVP.

MONSTER-IN-LAW, Robert Luketic

J. Lo + Jane Fonda? Doesn’t even matter how cringe-worthy some of the scenes are in this movie, it definitely ranks high for pure camp factor alone. Charlotte (Lopez) finally finds the man of her dreams, but his mother (Fonda) will stop at nothing to destroy the relationship. Wacky hijinks ensue. Of course. It may not highlight J. Lo’s true ability, but at least she’s having fun with the role. Bonus points for an Elaine Stritch cameo.

THE CELL, Tarsem Singh

Her makeup is enough reason to consider this one of her masterpieces, but this slightly surreal thriller shows J. Lo has pretty decent dramatic skills. The story follows a psychologist (Lopez) convinced by an FBI agent (Vince Vaughn) to use experimental technology to enter the mind of a comatose serial killer in order to find his latest victim. And with visuals that have such vast inspiration from Damien Hirst to Madonna’s “Bedtime Story” video, it’s overall one of her better films.

SELENA, Gregory Nava

Really, did you think anything else would make the cut? The biopic where Lopez plays the cherished Tejano music star whose life was tragically cut short was, as Robert Ebert said, her “star-making performance.” Though her film career has been shaky ever since, her innocence, passion and raw stage presence in Selena prove she’s a star.

This Is How You Can Look Like the Eternally Un-Aging Jennifer Lopez

 Photo: Matteo Prandoni/BFAnyc.com

Jennifer Lopez has a lot of things on her to-do list, and apparently, aging is not one of them. The superstar showed up to this year’s Golden Globes boasting her fabulous globes for the globe to see — and nobody was complaining. At 45-years-old, Jenny has come a long way from the block, but she definitely isn’t showing it. With no wrinkle in sight, one may wonder how after 45 years of living on this earth with its pollution JLO has only chiseled abs and luscious locks to show for it.

Let’s face it, to look like Jennifer Lopez you’re going to have to workout like Jennifer Lopez. Her trainer of choice is of course Tracy Anderson. The star is said to constantly work out with cardio including biking, running, boxing and the stair master. Never skipping a beat, JLO does not go two days without breaking a sweat. Simple enough, right?

No. You must also have a strict diet if you want to have that radiant glow that Jen has. This diet includes absolutely no sugar or salt. Also you’ve gotta give up your alcohol and those pesky cigarettes.

When it comes to her skin. the star told Allure that “I get my cleanser from my dermatologist. I need a great cleanser because I’ve had to wear a lot of makeup for so many years. I use a very mild makeup remover and a very basic sunscreen-moisturizer combo, and I try to get lots of sleep.”

You can easily try all of the above steps and in 20 years see where it gets you. But, let’s face it, with all her millions in the bank Jennifer surely secretly scurries to the world’s best doctors for some laser-encouraged tightening and lifting, scalpel or not.

Award show season is just around the corner, meaning red carpet season is just around the corner—and if celebrities know how to do one thing perfectly, it’s to wear designer duds and a full face of make up. Case in point: Selena Gomez’s dramatic back, and the Jenner Sister’s looking like pin-up dolls 5 years their senior. Who gets your vote for best dressed?

10 Most Stylish of the LACMA Gala… Who Gets Your Vote?

Photo: Billy Farrell/BFAnyc.com

Los Angeles experienced a sizzling hot Saturday night at the 2014 LACMA Art + Film Gala honoring artist Barbara Kruger and filmmaker Quentin Tarantino. In very L.A. fashion, a Kardashian was there along with multiple A-List bombshells — Salma Hayek, we’re looking at you! Kate Hudson looked like a bronze statue and once again Camilla Belle wore exactly what we wanted her to. Who’s your best dressed of the night?

Celebrity Couples That We Wish Would Rekindle the Flame

Photo: Billy Farrell/BFAnyc.com

It isn’t you, its me. Surely the couples in this category got their agents to whip up something a little more endearing to say. The truth is, breakups happen, but it so happens that these particular ones shouldn’t have.

1. Heidi Klum and Seal Mark-WoodworthPhoto: Mark Woodworth/BFAnyc.com

These two were together and married ages ago (The ’90s) and we wish we could #ThrowbackThursday their relationship solely for that fact that she has the body of an angel and he has the voice of an one. It also wouldn’t hurt if they could make some more beautiful babies.

2. Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron Screen-Shot-2014-10-15-at-10.32.18-PMPhotos: Billy Farrell/BFAnyc.com & Matteo Prandoni/BFAnyc.com

Zac and Vanessa’s on-screen romance played out before our eyes in the wildly popular Disney movie series “High School Musical.” Hoping for these two to get back together is like hoping for Hilary Duff and Aaron Carter to get back together and that (thankfully) is not going to happen. But Zanessa will forever hold a place in our nostalgic hearts of couples that failed.

3. Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Benefit celebrating ALEXANDER MCQUEEN: Savage Beauty Exhibition - InsidePhoto: Billy Farrell/BFAnyc.com

Miranda Kerr is a supermodel and Orlando Bloom is a movie star, these two were destined to find their way together at some point, and when they did the goddesses above were cheering. Unfortunately, these two are no longer. Yes, a hard pill to swallow. Orlando, stop throwing punches at Justin Bieber and start sending love letters to your ex!

4. Jennifer Lopez and P. Diddy Screen Shot 2014-10-15 at 10.32.52 PMPhotos: David X Prutting/BFAnyc.com & Billy Farrell/BFAnyc.com

Jenny from the block has been around the block a couple times. Jennifer Lopez has had more men than she can count on her freshly manicured hand. One man that stood out (and stood taller than Marc Anthony) was none other than hip hop royal P. Diddy. Puffy is more of man than any Casper Smart could be, and will protect his girl ’til the end. It’s time for J. Lo to change “I luh ya papi” to “I luh ya Puffy.”

5. Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe Screen Shot 2014-10-15 at 10.34.25 PMPhotos: Joe Schildhorn/BFAnyc.com & Matteo Prandoni/BFAnyc.com

We selfishly want to see these two get back together solely for that fact that we want to rewrite the ending of “Cruel Intentions” in real life. It would go a little something along the lines of Reese and Ryan marrying, having kids, and residing in a fabulous apartment on the Upper East Side.

10 Fashion Moments from the 2014 VMAs That Deserve Recognition

Image via

Without the formality of a show like the Oscars, the VMA Awards allow our favorite stars a night of creativity and fun when it comes to red carpet fashions. We get everything from gorgeous and sexy, to misguided and batshit. Since the program is an awards show, here are my own fashion awards for the night–

Best Shameless Self-Promotion: Nicki Minaj
Nicki Minaj was in full Anaconda mode following the music video release that shattered records with almost 20 million views in 24 hours. Clad in a Saint Laurent sequined snakeskin ensemble, Minaj kept makeup and accessories light —  a sweet reminder that she has a gorgeous face, even without bubblegum lipstick. Get it girl.

Best I Woke Up Like This: Beyoncé
Beyoncé was late and looked fancier than most–because why not. The Nicolas Jebran Couture gown isn’t my favorite thing she’s ever worn, and her earrings are verging on cartoon-big, but her soft waves are gorgeous and her skin in glowing. HOWEVER, the custom Tom Ford bejeweled leotard she performed her 16 minute long BEYONCÉ medley in was truly flawless.

Boobs: Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian wore a beaded Balmain (no surprise) mini that showed off her butt and boobs, which, to be fair, is understandable given that she is often between her much taller younger sisters Kendall and Kylie in photos. She looked gorgeous, and honestly, it’s not like Kim requires a special occasion for this amount of cleavage.

Best Effort to Try Something New: Taylor Swift
A bold departure from her old-country-singing-blush-toned gowns, Taylor Swift wore an alphabet printed blue onesie by Mary Katrantzou. I love Katrantzou’s surrealist-inspired prints but this did not do it for me. Taylor’s got legs for miles (see: her obsession with ModelFit on Bowery) and seemed to be having fun in the piece, but I’d have preferred a mini-dress or a less random seeming pattern. Still–if Taylor the pop singer wants to experiment with new styles, bring it on.

Best Timeless Glamour: Rita Ora
Rita Ora’s apple red Donna Karan Atelier gown slit up to her hip on one side was old Hollywood glamour at its best. Simple, sexy, and classic. Very Marilyn!

MILF-in-Chief: Gwen Stefani
Gwen Stefani wore a matching hot pink and black bustier and pants that looked like they were literally made for her–because they were, by her own line, L.A.M.B.

Best Please-Let-Me-Look-This-Good-When-I’m-45: J.Lo
J.Lo’s Charbel Zoe gown had more cutouts than not, and she rocked it–leg-slit, sparkle, and all. Here’s hoping she wore sunblock.

Best “Can-Be-Tamed”: Miley Cyrus
Miley wore a two-piece leather getup by Alexander Vaulthier —  sleek and mature. Leather outfits have been and are still stylish, and Miley’s hair–a simple crop in lieu of last year’s nubby side buns –looked adult and sophisticated paired with her simple silver heels.

Best WTF: Amber Rose
Amber Rose looked like she was wearing a tangle of Swarovski jewelry I liked in my tween years, and it made J.Lo’s dress look conservative. It just looks so uncomfortable!

Best Throwback: Katy Perry (with Riff Raff)
Katy Perry paid homage to queen of the early aughts in head-to-toe denim, throwing it back to Brit and J.T. circa 2001. She tweeted in advance: “WE’RE GOIN FOR DA BEST WORST DRESSED TODAY  #THISISHOWWEDOVMAS.” Nailed it.

How To Get Rihanna, JLo, & Katie Perry’s Grammy Looks

Sure, the Grammy’s were all about all that singing stuff, but let’s get to the shallow basics: people looked hot. Most notably, Rihanna, JLo, and Katy Perry. How did they look classic, glowy, and dollface? Well, I’m glad you asked… here’s BlackBook’s resident makeup artist Leah Bennett – whose work has graced the runways of London and New York – to give you the step-by-step on the trends.

Rihanna

Classic beauty-look never dates, and can be worn by all skin tones. The key with this look is not to overdo eyes, cheeks, or lips, but to create a balance and dimension in the face.

1. Choose a red that will suit your skin tone, whether it be a blue undertone, fuschia, or an orange undertone. Have fun and mix and match.

2. Skin should be dewy and fresh. Using a luminous foundation, such as Hourglass’s tinted moisturizer, which will give you that natural glow.

3. Use a natural concealer, like MAC’s select concealer, and layer where needed under the eyes, nose, and chin. The skin should be a flawless canvas.

4. For eyes, use gold tones or sliver and natural colors; these compliment that sexy red lip like miss Rihanna’s. But the key is in the lashes: use MAC’s number 7 for a natural voluptuous flare that opens and dramatizes the eye, completing that classic beauty look.

Jennifer Lopez

JLo can do no wrong. This look is about accentuating all your natural features. Contour, contour, contour.

1. JLo is the queen of dewy, glowy skin (evidence here)! Use Copacabana’s highlighter bars and mix in your choice of foundation. This will give you that extra boost of glow and light, and will reflect off the skin, creating that picture-perfect runway skin finish. Then, use a MAC’s matte bronzer to contour the cheekbones, chin and hair line. Blend and sculpt.

2. Frame the brows with Hourglass’s brow pencil, and comb hair upwards, framing the face.

3. Stila’s all-day liquid eyeliner will create that bold, ‘60s eyeliner look. JLo has framed her top and bottom lash line to create drama. This look is all about soft but strong angles, creating a skinnier face shape.

4. Keep a neutral lip to balance the luminous skin. This look is timeless and can be worn day and night.

Katie Perry

With Katie, it’s all about shimmer and metallic to reflect light and open the eyes.

1. Use taupe or gold as your base color, and matte dark black navy to contour the socket line. Thick liner is best to create drama to the eye top and bottom.   Like Katie, use a black pencil on the inner rim, such as MACs smolder eyeliner to create a sassy eye. Lashes are a must.

2. For the skin, create a natural matte finish with MAC’s pro longwear foundation. This will give you that doll face finish, and last all day.

3. Since this look is all about the eyes, keep the skin mild by opting for a neutral bronzer to sculpt the cheekbones, dusting lightly.

4. And here’s a trick for your lips: mix your concealer with a touch of gloss to create that perfect nude.
