Jay-Z Talks About His Mom’s Coming Out: ‘I Was So Happy She Was Free’

Jay-Z is the latest confirmed celebrity guest on the new David Letterman Netflix show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction.

Previously, we’ve seen clips of Beyoncé’s husband talking about his contemporaries, like Snoop Dogg and Eminem, and admiring their talents. In a newly released clip, the 4:44 rapper talks about his mom, Gloria Carter, who came out to him as a lesbian last year as he was making his record. She is featured on and the subject of the 4:44 track “Smile.”

Speaking to Letterman, Jay explains that when he finally heard her express her love for her same-sex partner: “I mean, I really cried. That’s a real story. I cried because I was so happy for her that she was free.”

Take a look at the new clip below.

Watch The All-Black ‘Friends’ Recreation for Jay-Z’s ‘Moonlight’ Video

If you’ve been faking your way through conversations about the all-black Friends recreation in Jay-Z’s new video “Moonlight” because you don’t have Tidal, you can stop now. The 4:44 track’s viral video is finally on YouTube for your streaming pleasure.

The brilliant video by Master of None co-creator Alan Yang is both a mediation on race representation in the industry and also a stark reminder that, yes, Friends was racist (and homophobic). For the video, Yang did a shot-for-shot remake of a scene from the Season Three episode “The One Where No One’s Ready,” which features cups of fat and a phone call from a boyfriend (voiced by Jay-Z), but that’s not what the video is about.

Besides featuring a cast that includes Issa Rae as Rachel, Tessa Thompson as Monica, Tiffany Haddish as Phoebe, Lakeith Stanfield as Chandler, and Lil Rel as Joey, the crux of the video focuses on Jerrod Carmichael as Ross. After Hannibal Buress shows up to say how lame the concept of a “black Friends” is, Carmichael breaks the fourth wall and wanders off the set while Jay-Z’s song plays.

At the end of the video, Carmichael walks through a door off set and onto a field where he sits on a bench and looks up at the moon—all while audio plays from this year’s Academy Awards when La La Land was mistakenly announced as the Best Picture winner instead of Moonlight.

It’s a powerful, moving video that even made Jay-Z cry when he saw it, and you owe it to yourself to watch it now that it’s been freed from the confines of Tidal.

Blue Ivy Made Her Rap Debut on a Bonus Track from Jay-Z’s 4:44 Album

When I was five years old, I spent my time riding tricycles down the street, watching Saturday morning cartoons, and sitting in a pile of Legos I had a habit of dumping on the floor. For Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s daughter Blue Ivy, the age of five won’t be remembered for anything as mundane as Tokyo Drift tricycle rides around the block. Ever since she was born into music’s most royal household, the world has waited with baited breath for her music debut and now, her time has arrived.

“Everything everything this my only single thing. Everything I hear is my answer,” Ivy spits on a verse so hot it could be a second sun before later declaring: “Never seen a ceiling in my whole life.” The song, called “Blue’s Freestyle/We Family,” is one of three new bonus tracks that coincide with Jay-Z’s 4:44 album dropping on every single streaming service not named Spotify.

The 45 seconds that Ivy spends rapping on the track are, quite simply, the cutest thing we’ve heard in weeks—and not just because we can’t understand half of what she says. As one would expect from a five-year-old, much of the verse is indecipherable but it does end with a truly fire mantra of “Boom shakalaka. Everything in shaka. Everything in faka.”

What does it mean? We have no idea, but what’s certain is that the internet has collectively exploded in celebration of her long-awaited music debut.

Jay Z Helps His Mom Come Out on a Track That Will Make You ‘Smile’

He may have 99 problems, but homophobia ain’t one. On 4:44, the new album from Beyoncé’s husband Jay-Z, the rap mogul helps his mom comes out as a lesbian in one of the purest songs of all time. Seriously, it’s the most heartwarming ode to his mom since Kanye West’s “Hey Mama” broke our hearts and, yes, it’s going to make you feel really shitty for the candle and roses you got your mom on Mother’s Day.

On “Smile,” Jay-Z spends nearly five minutes telling the story of how Gloria Carter lived in the closet all her life. “Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian. Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian. Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate. Society shame and the pain was too much to take,” he raps, “Cried tears of joy when you fell in love. Don’t matter to me if it’s a him or her. If her story weren’t enough to make you fall on the ground weeping, he closes out the song by giving her the gift of freedom from the oppression she’s felt all her life. Gloria herself shows up in the outro to close out the track with a poem that doubles as her coming out:

Living in the shadow can you imagine what kind of life it is to live? In the shadows people see you as happy and free because that’s what you want them to see. Living two lives, happy, but not free. You live in the shadows for fear of someone hurting your family or the person you love. The world is changing and they say it’s time to be free but you live with the fear of just being me. Living in the shadow feels like the safe place to be. No harm for them, no harm for me but life is short, and it’s time to be free. Love who you love, because life isn’t guaranteed. Smile.”

In response to the track, GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis released this statement: “Lesbian women are all too often erased or excluded from narratives surrounding LGBTQ people. By sharing her truth with the world, Gloria Carter is increasing visibility of lesbian women of color at a critical time and sending a powerful message of empowerment to the entire LGBTQ community that is perfectly timed with the end of Pride Month.”

Jay-Z’s 4:44 is currently available to stream through Tidal and includes features from Beyoncé, Frank Ocean, and Blue Ivy Carter.

Beyoncé, Jay Z, and DJ Khaled Have Dropped a New Single

Image via Tidal

Following the Grammys’ ignorant and wild decision to snub Beyoncé’s Lemonade for Album of the Year, Queen Bey has dropped a new single, “Shining,” with her husband Jay-Z and friend DJ Khaled.

The last time Beyoncé and Jay have collaborated was 2013’s saving grace, Drunk in Love. While B did pick up Grammys last night for Best Video and Best Urban/Contemporary Album, she was beat out by Adele for the top awards.

“Shining” includes a few interesting lines, particularly this one from Jay-Z that some are speculating may be a diss to Drake: “I know y’all ain’t out here talking numbers, right? I know y’all ain’t out here talking summers, right? I know you walkin’ round, talking down/Saying boss shit when you a runner, right?”

You’ll also want to note that the single’s sover image feature’s Khaled’s precious son Asahd Tuck Khaled, looking dapper in a suit and bowtie.

“Shining” is now streaming exclusively on Tidal. You can preview the single below.

Stop Trying to Make Tidal Happen. It’s Not Gonna Happen: Madonna Holds Out Hope for Doomed Streaming Service

Madonna via Wikipedia

Just stop, Madonna. The “Ghosttown” singer and co-owner of lame music streaming service Tidal (along with Jay-Z and Beyoncé) is still holding out hope that it will become a thing. Spoiler alert: it won’t.

“It’s just the beginning, so we’re working out a lot of kinks and hopefully we’re going to build something unique and amazing that’s going to attract a lot of people,” she said in a recent interview.

What will be unique and amazing about Tidal? It boasts higher quality, but really the only thing unique about it is its price point, which is higher than its competitors. Offers of a family plan and student discounts aren’t doing much to save Tidal, whose over 900,000 followers are likely just riding out a free trial before they hop back to Spotify.

She continued defending Tidal (and tried to shut down haters who say this is just about making rich musicians richer) by saying,

“It’s important that people understand we didn’t create Tidal, we didn’t put this together, we didn’t all join forces because we’re broke and we want more money. The idea is we want to support other artists and we want people to understand this is our heart, this is our work, and we want people to recognize that and we want other artists to have a chance.”

LOL. Even other artists have disparaged Tidal as merely another means of making more money for the big artists who own it, not the indie bands who can’t catch a break.

Aside from Madonna and Jay-Z’s bank accounts, money’s still a problem for the service. It was reported last month in Bloomberg that Tidal may be having problems finding the cash to pay its requested royalties, which means it could lose catalogues of some big-draw artists like co-owner Beyoncé. And then, Tidal will really be up shit’s creek without a paddle.

5 Celebrity Friendships We Wish Were a Little Less Platonic

The Supreme Court didn’t technically edit the constitution like a rough draft and deem same-sex couples all over the United States the right to marry. Buuut, it did decline the prospect of ruling it unlawful. Couples in the five states immediately affected were rushing to the courthouse to officially unite their love.

In honor of the growing triumphs in the gay community, we put together a collection of same-sex celebrity best friends that should take advantage of the ruling.

1. Cara Delevingne & Rihanna BFA_10052_1212416Photo: David X Prutting/BFAnyc.com

If these two tied the knot it would be the ultimate it-girl power couple. Rihanna’s killer vocals along with amazing personal style combined with Cara’s model-status and eyebrows make these BFFs the ideal couple. The pair have tendencies to run around in bikinis on yachts together and that’s a site we’d never get tired of seeing.

2. Matt Damon & Ben Affleck Screen-Shot-2014-10-06-at-9.15.43-PMPhotos: Benjamin Lozovsky/BFAnyc.com & Billy Farrell/BFAnyc.com

There are two milestones a couple accomplishes in their life. One is winning an Oscar together and another is getting married. These two obviously have already won the Oscar together for “Good Will Hunting” so naturally it’s time to tie the knot.

3. Tina Fey & Amy PoehlerScreen-Shot-2014-10-06-at-9.24.32-PMPhotos: Reed Blackwater/BFAnyc.com & Billy Farrell/BFAnyc.com

If Tina Fey and Amy Poehler got married and had a child it would be the next Joan Rivers. These two funny ladies pack so many laughs and talent, their holy matrimony would be truly historical.

4. Kanye West & Jay-ZBFA_2381_254916Photo: David X Prutting/BFAnyc.com

I know the marriage of sir Jay-Z and Queen Beyoncé brings a whole new meaning to the term power couple, but could you imagine if Jay decided to tie the knot with long time BFF Kanye West? They could easily drive to Illuminati meetings together and even share Givenchy tees.

5. Beyoncé & Gwyneth Paltrow Screen-Shot-2014-10-06-at-9.46.42-PMPhotos: Billy Farrel/BFAnyc.com & Julian Mackler/BFAnyc.com

You didn’t think we’d leave Beyoncé in the dust, did you? Of course it only makes sense that she and kale-loving BFF Gwyneth Paltrow do the world a favor and unite as what would clearly be the world’s most powerful and gorgeous couple. Maybe Gwyneth is saying sayonara to Chris Martin in hopes of getting closer to Queen Bey. One can dream.

Bey and Jay Celebrate Her Birthday With an Italian Holiday

With all the divorce rumors surround our favorite power couple, we’ve all been questioning if Bey and Jay are still crazy in love. But of course, it appears that in fact they are—or they are posing to be–thanks to a slew of photos  of the two enjoying their time by sea in Portofino, Italy for B’s 33rd birthday.

Holding hands as they walk down the luxurious Italian streets, Jay looked calm, cool, and happy to be with his birthday girl—methinks,  a smiling Beyonce clad in a floral bikini and thigh-split sarong is likely to have helped. Haters to the left on this one, because from here, it looks like these two aren’t bowing down anytime soon.

SolangeGate Continues: Beyoncé’s Lil Sis Goes Rogue

Photo: @SaintRecords

All of the sudden I feel sick, a cold sweat and goosebumps included. Details are swarming now with the aftermath of the Solange beatdown on Jay Z. Solange may sing about “Losing You” but apparently little sister may be losing it. Teams for the all parties have remained mum with any details as to what Jay did or didn’t do to provoke the physical outburst. In a shocking twist, Solange has taken to Instagram to send out a silent but deadly threat, deleting nearly ALL photographs of Beyoncé, except one dating back 15 months ago. “Some Things Never Seem to F*****g Work,” and Solange, it seems like this whole family feud is not working for you.

Feeling lost? Catch up on the Bey drama here.

Backlash from the fight has only continued as Jay and Bey fans are basically attacking Solange’s chic Instagram @SaintRecords with nasty threats and accusations. Solange, it’s time for you and your family members to become “Lovers in the Parking Lot” and get over whatever issues you have, if not just for your own good, than for the wellbeing of the entire world!

I’ve been reading reports claiming that the brawl was sparked due to Jay’s lingering promise to help boost Solange’s music career. The rapper reportedly has not had the time to help make Solange a household name. We refuse to believe any “claim” or “report” and hope to get a text back from our close friend Beyoncé so we can just diffuse this issue that is sticking out like a sore thumb and get back to life as we know it.
