Tonight: Partying with Erik Foss, Domi Dollz, & Shell Sheddy

I’m not going to sweat it, but I did RSVP for multiple events tonight that I can’t possibly physically attend unless "Scottie" starts to "beam me" around town. Two of them are uptown and the other two are downtown. Guess which two get my fabulous face.

OK, I’m gonna try. First on the list is a group show opening that includes my bro (we even have bro tattoos) Erik Foss. The show WAVE is presented by MISC and includes artists Judy Chicago, Michael St. John, Peter Alexander, Amany Ahmad, Shelter Serra, Colton Brown, Tom Forkin, and Angel Otero. While I’m up there I might as well scoot over to Hudson Terrace, 621 West 46th Street, for the APM Models’ Summer Party. I’m tight with Penny Basch and love their events.

Or, I just may stay south and pop into the last Domi Dollz evening for the summer at the Museum of Sex. These wonderful gals never fail to stand and deliver. They are sexy and sweet – sometimes – and the event promises lots of "boy toys.” The people I have sent to these soirees tell me that they can be life changing for them and theirs. It is quite educational, with zero chance of falling asleep in class.

I will surely attend photographer Shell Sheddy’s opening at Bar 82, 136 Second Avenue. This event starts at 7pm and ends at 11pm, after which the whole posse will scoot over to Hotel Chantelle for the after party, where I will DJ rock and roll with Sam Valentine. The show is titled "LES Images: The Creativity, Community and Struggle Continues," and promises that "we will be graced with Sheddy’s breath-taking visuals of raw humanity and real world, life-affirming spirit."

I also want to mention a fundraiser that I am honored to lend my name to. Old friend Don Welch asked me to help out:

Gwen McCrae is famous for her hit "FUNKY SENSATION.” The dance community has gotten on board big time. The outpouring of support, and the DJs and talent that have since gotten involved speaks volumes of the love and class always shown by Gwen. Party Like There’s No Tomorrow Because There Isn’t One

The best part about the end of the world happening tomorrow are all of the parties happening tonight. We like to laugh and drink in the face of doom, and I find that really admirable. BlackBook’s holiday party is tonight too, which means that whether the world ends or not, it doesn’t matter – I’ll still feel like death on Friday.  If you don’t have plans yet for your last night on Earth, let me help you with these really hot parties happening tonight and tomorrow that’ll be swallowed up by fog and a fiery blaze.

Laugh your doom off with The Daily Show comedians at Union Hall:
On Friday, join comedians Wyatt Cenac, NIkki Glaser, & Lisa Delarios for their "The Afterlife Comedy Show" at Union Hall. They’ll be performing stand-up and attempting to resolve, in our last hours, life’s biggest questions – probably something like"Why does my grandma not love me anymore?" and "Why are poached eggs called ‘poached?’" And there will be an extra-special prize for the best answer to the major question: "What would you do on your last day of the world?" Friday the 21st. 8:30pm, $8. Blow your eardrums out at Knitting Factory because you won’t need them anymore:
Guaranteeing that their apocalpyse-themed rock show will "rock so hard that its reverberations will shatter planet Earth to the core," Knitting Factory will make your ears ring the next day – though there won’t be a next day so who cares. Get weird with HuffPost Weird News at Hotel Chantelle:
The HuffPost section devoted to all things bizarre nationwide is holding an open tequila and wine bar all night,  and 1/2 off beer and well cocktails from 8pm-10pm, at eccentric Lower East Side rooftop lounge Hotel Chantelle. Music by Miss Jade, Chi Duly, and LadiesPlease will be going all night, while revelers will cradle tequila shots and dutifully declare the slogan "No tomorrow. No hangover." Good ol’ logic. The Best Places to Watch the NYC Fireworks

Here at BlackBook, we take Independence Day pretty seriously. Not only is it a national holiday, but it’s also the only summer day we have off from work, thus presenting a wonderful excuse to indulge all day outside on charred, ketchup-drenched burgers, icy American beers, and semi-cheesy red/white/blue apparel. We’ve put together a list of our top five favorite places to witness that spectacular view of the fireworks and have a holiday that you won’t be able to stop thinking about the next day. 

Paradise on the Hudson

I admit, I haven’t been to the Hudson Hotel for a minute. I rushed in and out of Good Units for an event to support fellow designer Robert McKinley when it debuted. About a year ago, I just had to attend a Carmen D’Allessio affair, but alas, it was at Hudson Terrace. I wandered around the splendor of the hotel looking for her and ignored the crowd that was partying hardy. At that time, it was a predictable working class crowd. Cloned yuppies, all wearing almost the same slacks and patterned button downs and young girls with A-line dresses from the same shops. There wasn’t a soul in sight that I recognized. I imagined it was like being in a boutique hotel in Atlanta or Chicago. I smiled and avoided knocking people over as I walked through the property, absorbing its beauty and intelligence. It was a bit like walking through a museum of hospitality design. The place is magnificent, a monumental achievement from Philippe Starck and former owner/operator Ian Schrager. Over time, the real foliage has overgrown the fake stuff and the property has become a wonderland of restaurants and watering holes. There are rooms for dining and drinking everywhere, and a couple of Gramercy Park Hotel-type roofs. One is for guests and the other is for weddings and affairs and such. All-in-all, I don’t venture up to 58th and 9th much. Until now, I had no reason to. My mind’s been changed. The cloned crowd might still be there, but new light has descended on the palace and added a high note of style and grace.

A downtown hipster crowd as beautiful as the surroundings has been curated by “Regional Director of Nightlife Promotions,” Salvatore Imposimato. The Morgans Hotel Group, which operates the property, added a new restaurant that’s made me a firm believer that something special is happening up there. Hudson Hall opened two weeks ago and is fabulous, functional, stylish and fun. 30 foot high walls are covered with hundreds of screens (or is it really only one?). Black and white rock stars, hipster hippies and beautiful people from a still-inspiring era gone by, are projected 360 degrees, surrounding diners with reasons to be cheerful. They cavort and play as if to show us how it’s done. It’s described as an “Ivy League Mess Hall” and you get orange trays and pick up your food from the kitchen in the center of the room and sit on wooden communal tables. Chef Brian Young’s food gets more than a passing grade. Small plates of exciting fare “created from premium sustainable-organic products, indigenous to the New York-Hudson Valley area” makes you wonder why so many others just don’t grasp this concept.

I ran over to DJ Princess Starlight when she put on Paul Mccartney’s “Band on the Run.” She played track after track of fun rock and a crowd of fun rocksters constantly came over to say ‘hey.’ The Tuesday night party “Ladyland,” usually in the outdoor “Private Park,” was moved inside due to the cooling rain. Princess Starlight is getting lots of buzz because of her association with Lady Gaga. Now everyone goes goo goo over Gaga but I’m here to say that the Princess needs no one to validate her. She’s the real deal. The party also has former DJ Kelle Calco who ran those Rolling Stones parties over at the Belmont Lounge that had me gushing. His crowd is the freshest, hottest, coolest newbies.

My favorite misnomer, Miss Guy, brings her old school/new school following and DJ flavors to Thursdays. I could spend a whole day telling you how fabulous Guy is. I guess I’ll have to do so soon. Debbie Harry came to visit recently. Chris Shipps who brings a sharp model-heavy, rocker crew is also on hand. They have fabulous dinner parties before each soiree and as I looked around the “mess hall” I forgot about the troubles, trials and tribulations that defines the hot mess that is New York nightlife. I can’t recommend parties more. It was enough to keep me from going to Brooklyn (again!) last night. Okay, I went late. The Hudson’s nightlife experience is expanding with ex-Amalia/d’Or/Highbar promotional player Alex Ancheta helping with bookings. DJ’s Junior Senior, Andy Rourke (Smiths), Ilirjana Alushaj of Apache Beat, The Rapture, etc. are forthcoming. The hotel absolutely gets the idea that they’re physically a bit off to the side and up at 58th and 9th, and are spending money to attract a sharp set that gives the complex, hip New York vibe that its guests are expecting. This bit of flavor is taking on a life of its own and is fast becoming a scene.

A former employee took me for a walk through the bowels of the hotel, through secret passages to undeveloped rooms. There’s one room where an ancient swimming pool awaits a redux. It was supposedly built in the ‘20s for Danish women, or something like that. It stunned me. A rusting iron railing protects a balcony and the old tile and no diving signs channeled me to Jay Gatsby. It’s a thousand photo shoots waiting to happen. We passed through Good Units as it lay dormant just waiting for a fantastic event to bring it to life. My friend told me Susanne Bartsch will be hosting a weekly Thursday there come September. The Hudson won’t stop ‘til we get enough.

There’s an old adage in nightlife that has almost always been true. Uptown will often travel downtown to party (or as they say “slum”), while downtown will never go uptown. There have been a few notable exceptions to the rule. I recall Arthur Weinstein’s Hurrah, and sometimes downtowners ogled the swells at Studio 54. There have been smatterings of moments at the sadly gone Tavern on the Green. The Hudson Hotel is a wondrous palace where anything seems possible. Years ago, I attended some party for some movie. I was hanging with my old friend Johnny Ramone who was playing pool with his new friend, Nicholas Cage. At the time, it just seemed awkward. The leather-jacketed punk rock star and his movie star friend who was trying so hard to be cool and accessible. Cage shook my hand and looked me in the eyes and seemed so sincere that he actually became likeable. I never got Cage. Over the years he would pop by my joints and I never understood what he was made of. I surmised that hanging with the ultimate punk was sort of like marrying Elvis’s daughter. Anyways, they didn’t seem to belong in these lavish quarters. It was the last time I saw Johnny who died too young, and in California, no less. I never intentionally went back to the Hudson as I also didn’t feel I fit. Yesterday, I didn’t feel that way at all. The difference, I believe, between the Morgan’s incarnation and Ian’s is the staff. With Ian, they’re always beautiful, well dressed, smart and well-versed. The Morgans crew is all that and something more. They’re super friendly. As I wandered around the place and peeked at this and that, I was smiled at and offered help. I saw managers quietly solve problems and help guests with caring smiles. It’s warmer now at the Hudson. The crowd may soon catch up to the aesthetics. It’s got my vote. It got me up there and has me planning to come back.

Tonight, I’ll be out celebrating Avenue’s one year anniversary in addition to my usual shenanigans.

Brooklynization, Paris Powwow and Sally Shan’s Birthday

The Brooklynization of Uncle Steve continues as I find a better product, a better meal, a better conversation and all around better attitude there. I hit Union Pool yet again, and caught Dead Stars– a fabulous band. Cousins Jaye Moore on drums and Jeff Moore on guitar are legendary in Japan, so I’m told, from their previous band, Orange Park. Jon Watterberg plays bass. They were absolutely brilliant. You know a rock band is solid when you’re hearing their set for the first time and the songs catch you. Afterward we all hung outside by the wood burning fire pit and talked rock n’ roll hootchie-coo. I am so tired of the jaded haters and wannabes who have taken over the Manhattan club scene that I retreat to Brooklyn constantly to hang out with homogeneous hipsters wearing variations of the same plaid. At least there’s good conversation and an unending supply of said hipsters. Everywhere I go there is a party. I bought a Diet Coke at Union Pool and they charged me a buck. The only thing you get for a buck in a Manhattan joint is a wrapped white mint from the bathroom attendant.

I played a little skee-ball at Full Circle Bar and had a seriously fantastic meal at Vutera, where waitrons Jeff and Sarah made it special. The large table next doo, presided over by my new best friend Jeff Shonert, engaged us in witty conversation and party games. It’s like that every night. I’m going to Brooklyn Bowl tonight and this is either a severe midlife crisis or the real thing. Speaking of the real thing, my second foray to the Belmont Lounge’s Stones night proved to be even more satisfying then the last. This is a beautiful, friendly, fun crowd .

I chatted with my jet-setting pal Paul Sevigny about the weather and the whether or nots. He’s in town after Costa Rica and on his way to Paris with the lucky ones. My pal Malcolm Harris is already there and I asked him to give me a blow by blow of all the ooh la la action. He says:

“’I’ve got to be honest, not much on the way of reporting on Paris nightlife. As much as there are a lot of places open, the only place that really matters and has a heart and soul is Le Baron. They seem to get nightlife and embrace all the creatures of creativity. Le Régine, Le Montana, Le Magnifique and- uggghhh VIP – all seem to lack a true vibe. They all seem like people crammed into a box because it’s just a little better than staying at home… For me all roads lead to Le Baron. No matter where I start the night, for some reason the New Yorker in me leads me to Le Baron. So if you want me to cover the nightlife, just know that all roads lead to Le Baron.”

Sally Shan is a tenacious presence on the night life scene. A year ago when she was starting out, I interviewed her and she says I gave her the push and the credibility she needed. This may or may not be true, but a year later finds her growing and very relevant to owners concerned with the bottom line. The bottom line with Sally is that she consistently generates money for clubs in need of that stuff. I asked a highly successful club owner and marketing guru what the story was with Sally Shan. He said, “Sally has the remarkable ability to deliver a spending crowd. While many promoters only can bring people to a good party, Sally’s crowds are loyal to her and will follow her anywhere. Once there, she takes care of them and ensures them a great time.“ I caught up with Sally and chatted with her on her “Nightlife Anniversary,” celebrating the annual date she got into nightlife, near to her week long birthday celebration.

Its been a year since you started working in nightlife. How did you start your business and where is it today? Like with any business, I started with an idea; how could I make some money in this damn recession? So I started with one party. That one party went from one venue a week to three to now six parties at some of the top venues in NYC. Along with that I’ve expanded to incorporate a team of promoters, artist managers, fashion and charity events, and corporate sponsorships.

What clubs do you work at now? I get requests from a lot of different clubs all the time. The key places I’m working at right now are Greenhouse, Hudson Terrace, Tenjune, Marquee, Kiss & Fly, Pink, La Pomme.

What does your crowd expect of you and how do you make sure they get it? As you know here in NYC we expect everything, and that’s what I deliver. Best venues and locations, hottest DJs and music, beautiful people and atmosphere and, of course, Sally Shan, they get me too.

What’s the difference between Sally Shan the brand and the person? Sally Shan the brand is the experience I create, it’s what I give back to people. Sally Shan the person is what I do to stay balanced. What creates that balance is my integrity, values and purpose. That’s what allows me to go and build a great brand.

After promotions at clubs where does your brand go? My brand goes everywhere I go, and where it’s going is to creating corporate alliances. For example Svedka Vodka is sponsoring my birthday party. I’m establishing relationships with clubs internationally to take the Sally Shan experience worldwide. I’m working with designers and brands to promote charities and private events. It’s really about creating a world of lifestyle that has me looking at all forms of media, print, digital and possibly television. It should be a fun ride.

Who are your influences, mentors, idols in clubs and out. You mean besides you Steve? Well, the world I came from is one that was always immersed in live entertainment. Broadway, theater, TV and film. So now I take a lot of that creative energy to create live experiences for people in club and party settings. I choose my mentors and idols from a wide range of places, mavericks and pioneers in film, music and fashion. All the things that make up part of who I am.

Where do you hang when you’re not working? I take my brand with me everywhere but I also know when I need to recharge. I frequent Miami and LA for a quick break.

What are you going to be when you grow up? My best ideas have come from breaking the rules, being creative, not knowing what an adult would do, so I hope I don’t grow up too quickly.

Your most satisfying club experience? Ask me after my birthday celebration week. It starts tonight at Hudson Terrace with DJ Peter Paul and DJ Alan Liao. Sunday it’s at Tenjune with a special guest performance and Tuesday at Greenhouse there’s a birthday CD tribute for my EDEN party. I have a feeling that those will be one of my best club experiences.

A Gift List for Clubdom

The ghosts of Christmas past drive me to self-analytical frenzy, that gets mixed in with the shopping and the holiday greetings whirlwind. Then there’s the, “I love her, she loves me not, she loves me, I can’t stand her 75 percent of the time” pantomime. That leads into who? what? where? New Year’s Eve desperation. With work and traffic, money runs and non-stop Christmas muzak, I think I’m starting to lose it. Gonna leave you to your thing and I’ll go do mine. Before I go, I’m going to give some clubs some uncle Steve advice: What “should” each club want for Christmas?

Avenue: A deep breath. 1Oak: Another year like this one. Or better– like the year before, as the recession comes to an end. Boom Boom Room/18th floor: A laugh track and a high-speed money counter. Bungalow 8: A real deal redux and a neighborhood revival. The Jane: Another chance! The Beatrice : Clarity. Rose Bar : A Basquiat and a big hug. Provocateur: Patience and humility. Simyone: Diversity to go along with all that quality, good looks and charm. Rdv: A “stay true to your school” t-shirt. Cielo: A moment away from cops and courts to concentrate on the real club side of things. Pacha: The same plus a VIP host who knows everybody in clubdom and gets them to come. Lit: A clone for Mr. Foss and a swiffer sweeper. Apotheke: More of the old (crowd) and more of the same (delicious cocktails). Greenhouse: One clear public message besides the green thing or the green thing and chain of command. Juliet: A new lighting concept and lots of fabric. Hudson Terrace: The Copacabana. The Eldridge: 25 more square feet. M2: A real good old school club night with lots of familiar faces. This place rocks when filled with good peeps. La Pomme: Time to build its own crowd. GoldBar: A gold medal for Jon “the legend” Lennon and a little more light. It’s too dark to appreciate the crowd. Marquee: Glass and maybe a once a month huge DJ and a clearing out of the furniture. Webster Hall: Convictions. Southside: Brotherly love. Ella: A little respect. Gansevoort Roof, Highbar, Empire Hotel: Eternal sunshine, endless summer. The Box: Moist towelettes and more Patrick Duffy.

Who am I to tell all these young studs what they may or may not need. But I do remember something James Brown once said: “I taught them everything they know, but not everything I know.” Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.
