12 Fashion Stories You Need To Read Now

It’s campaign season. Let’s discuss.

1. Moschino Amputates Sasha Luss

moschino

When I hear about photoshop mishaps concerning magazine covers or ad campaigns all of which are staked on amounts of money beyond my meager imagination, I can only think one thing. Who let this happen? It’s so obvious that it will be called out, and so, IMHO, ‘twould be better to let bodies be real and avoid the outpouring of critique that is then inevitable. But sometimes, it’s not even about body image. As is the case in Moschino’s otherwise pretty cool new ad campaign, shot by Steven Meisel and starring the very hip Anna Ewers, Hollie-May Saker, and a mysteriously one-legged Sasha Luss. Whatever happened to your leg, Sasha, we hope it was painless and you’re back on two feet now…and all that.

2. Biebs for CK (#hiscalvins)

biebs

Justin Bieber may skateboard in sweater dresses and frequently rock harem pants, but no matter what trend he tries, he stays loyal to his Calvins, because, duh. The now-20 year old drops trou (well, rocks ’em extra low-rise) to show off that infamous waistband in a series of also photoshopped pics for his starring role in the new campaign. He appears to have received an, um, upgrade, in definition, as well as some extra pubes. Cool.

3. And…in the Category of People Who Hang Out With Biebs, We Have Kylie Jenner on the Cover of Cosmo

kylie

All by herself. So there Kendall. And Kim. And Khloe. She’s sporting hyper-ombre’d hair (grey?), a trend I didn’t know was still happening, and discusses her lips (a very popular topic of conversation in this world) stating that surgery is not something she “desires” right now, and she has simply learned to kontour. Oh, to be a Kardashian.

4. Alexa’s Music Video Debut–Inspired by Denim

Screen Shot 2015-01-07 at 2.36.25 PM

Alexa Chung’s music video debut, directed by Gia Coppola, and inspired by her upcoming collaboration with AG, features the leggy Brit enthusiastically performing a karaoke rendition of her song “Blue Denim” (how meta) to an audience of bored party guests. She’s got on a little denim dress and white skimmers and looks cool (obviously) in spite of her disinterested friends (and boyfriend?). I would like the dress, please.

5. Bloggers Go Print on Lucky’s Latest Cover

lucky cover

Chiara Ferragni of The Blonde Salad, Nicole Warne of Gary Pepper Girl, and Zanita Whittington of Zanita.com.au have just become the first bloggers to grace the cover of a major mag. It’s no surprise that it’s Lucky being that Editor-in-Chief, Eva Chen, is known for pioneering the rocky road that is the relationship between print and digital. This is sure to be a cover that stirs up opinions.

6. This is Not the Best Revenge

C. Wonder, awkwardly founded by Chris Burch after his divorce from ex-wife Tory, and said to be an act of revenge, will close its last 11 stores due to the competitive nature of the industry. The brand’s social media accounts are already gone. Burch, however, will be okay. He recently bought an island in Indonesia.

7. Jared Leto’s Abs Might Make You Want a Fanny Pack

leto

Here is an example of ombre that I have no sass about. You do you, Jared Leto, you shirtless, legging-ed “hip pack” hawker. I’d also like to note that this seems very appropriate to Jordan Catalano-era fashion too.  Some celebs make fragrances, Leto has this.

8. The Show Will Go On at Schiaparelli

In spite of Marco Zanini’s recent exist and the house of Schiaparelli’s current creative director-less-ness, the show will go on, on January 26th for Paris Couture Week.

9. The Jagger Sisters Team Up for Sonia Rykiel

rykiel

The beautiful offspring of Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall, sisters Georgia May and Elizabeth Jagger co-star in Sonia Rykiel’s new ad campaign shot by Juergen Teller. The two also both walked in the September runway show. This casting represents a cross-section of those we’re seeing make headlines–the celebrity/model/celebrity-by-association hybrid. Either way, the girls have their father’s rockstar panache.

10. Marc Kerimzadeh Joins the CFDA as Editorial and Communications Director

Kerimzadeh formerly worked at WWD and has fifteen years of fashion coverage experience. He will help the CFDA develop their editorial voice and brand.

11. Cara Delevingne: Renaissance Woman

Another woman whose name requires many “///” Ms. Delevingne can now add “contributing editor” to her supermodel/actress/designer/set-of-eyebrows C.V.

12. Jourdan Dunn Makes History

jourdan dunn

Jourdan Dunn made history this month as the first Black solo cover model for Vogue UK in 12 years. She’s wearing a beautiful Prada dress and Patrick Demarchelier took the pics. The last woman to do so was Naomi Campbell in 2002.

5 Fashion Celeb Duos That Should Remake ‘The Simple Life’

Photo: Matteo Prandoni/BFAnyc.com

In 2007 the world lost a gem so rare that we are worried that nothing like it will see the light of day again. It was a television show that encompassed nearly everything that is nurturing and important, ‘The Simple Life’. Starring then best friends Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, the reality show brought laughs, tears, and WTFs. It may have never won an Emmy, but it did win a place in the history of pop-culture (and our hearts).

Seeing Paris fall off a horse and watching Nicole stuff a five year-old’s bra is something that can never be replicated… But if it was, we put together a list of fashion friends that could easily take the lead.

1. Georgia May Jagger and Cara Delevingne Neil-RasmusPhoto: Neil Rasmus/BFAnyc.com

As the story goes, both are extremely sought after models; Georgia’s dad is the front man of one of the worlds biggest rock bands, and both are blonde. Throw in cute accents and this show is hotter than a pop-tart fresh out of the toaster.

2. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Matteo-PrandoniPhoto: Matteo Prandoni/BFAnyc.com

Fashion’s favorite set of drape-wearing twins should seriously consider a career transition. For a duo that started out on the silver screen, it is only natural they get back to their roots and have another television hit. I can only imagine the faces they would give the piglets when dishing out the morning feed.

3. Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez Billy-FarrellPhoto: Billy Farrell/BFAnyc.com

The team behind everyone’s favorite label Proenza Schouler are not only talented, but have looks that were basically made for TV. They’ve already starred in an episode of “The Day Before” that followed the pair’s work ethic and antics counting down the days before there fashion show. Once you dip your toes in the reality show pond, it’s hard to leave. So, Jack and Lazaro, use your PS1s to collect eggs from the coop.

4. Alexa Chung and Poppy Delevingne Joe-Schildhorn-2Photo: Joe Schildhorn/BFAnyc.com

You didn’t think we’d mention one Delevingne and leave the other out, did you? Alexa Chung wrote a book simply titled “It.” I believe it is time for “It” to be something a little more along the lines of primetime television. She and fashion BFF Poppy Delevingne basically have been Paris and Nicole just not with cameras following them around. It’s time for these British babes to ditch the gifted gowns and rock overalls on the cornfield.

5. Gigi Hadid and Kendall JennerJoe-SchildhornPhoto: Joe Schildhorn/BFAnyc.com

These California girls have taken over the fashion world like the black plague. Both donning bob-cuts at the Marc Jacobs show and enjoying everything that Paris had to offer this season. They also are no strangers to reality TV. Gigi’s mom Yolanda Foster stars in Bravo’s “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” and Kendall, well, you know. Throw these beauties on a farm and it would look like a spread for CR Fashion Book, except funny.

Super Moons, Kendall (Jenner) + Jewels with Eddie Borgo: #NYFW Day 5

Eddie Borgo and some of his gorgeous new jewels

What day is it again? After toughing it out in the trenches — if braid bars and yoga and ogling gorgeous fashion can be called “the trenches” — for 5+ days, we’re starting to do things like sing, “What’s the day again,” to the tune of What’s My Age Again. Clever! We know.

BTW you can follow up through #NYFW on Instagram at @alyssashapiro, @sarajanenyc, @emilyovaert, and of course at @blackbookmag.

Sara: Alyssa, where have you been at since we hung out with Eddie Borgo this morning., who I know you’ve hung out with before, but I LOVED him.

Alyssa: He’s great, isn’t he? It’s a treat to visit his showroom. There are always macarons… and I always try on jewelry. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to, but I can’t help it! It’s like playing dress up in your mom’s closet but with really cool, gorgeous, relevant jewelry, instead of, you know, pearls. Though I love pearls. June baby here.

And yes, I’m redoing my manicure as we type.

Sara: I remember saving up for one of his smaller bracelets when his line first came out so the fashion nerd in me was pretty psyched.

Alyssa: Yes! Same. So while Sara and I were hanging out with Eddie and his new collection, what did you get up to, Emily?

Emily: Saw Kendall, Georgia May Jagger, Alexa Chung, AND Anna Wintour.  Finally got some big celeb sightings in today.

Alyssa: Hanging’ with the big guns! I like how you don’t think Kendall needs a last name, but freaking Georgia May does.

Sara: Is it weird that I am significantly more excited by Alexa and Kendall than Anna? Anna sat in front of me at Bridges of Madison County a few months ago, though, and I did not watch it for a moment. Kendall (her agency?) decided she didn’t need a last name, which is so endlessly hilarious to me. Like, sweetie, we can’t forget 10 seasons.

Alyssa: BAHAHA. Yes. They’ve provided quality TV for some time now, and I say that without a hint of irony. I appreciate their contribution.

Emily: I feel like I can be on a first name basis with the Kardashians. But really, I was so excited to see Georgia. I’m a HUGE Rolling Stones fan, and she is rock royalty.

Alyssa: We can. There is no other Kim in the world. But also, Georgia May forever.

Sara: Actually just LOLed. One more celeb thing: Nicki (Minaj’s) video with the Alexander Wang models, dancing to Anaconda is one of the best things to come out of NYFW.

Anyway. My day was super chill. I spent the morning with Alyssa and Jacob for a hot sec with Eddie Borgo and then walked two blocks to the New Museum for a different kind of fashion show. They are showing an exhibit of Snoopy and his sister Belle, and shortly you will be able to read a whole article on this exhibit.

Alyssa: Hi, I did not know Snoopy had a sister.

Sara: Um, me neither, but they are an extremely well dressed sibling pair. Vintage Chanel, Gucci, and of course newer styles from the likes of DVF, VPL, Opening Ceremony, and more. I was actually really excited because I got a poster which someday, I will frame. THEN, I got a Snoopy manicure.

snoopy nails

Alyssa: But no framing today, because fashion is the only thing?

Sara: Not a chance. I walked west after the Phillipp Plein store opening and literally thought, wow, this is the first time I have been outside and not running to a show in DAYS. I was out late (for me, but I am 97) with Peyton List last night. By late, I really don’t mean that late. Like 1:30 a.m. But today I was so tired, I got a little weepy. Eek. Fashion-emergency.

Alyssa: Okay this is really important, but it’s the Super Moon. Full moon in full effect. Not even joking, be careful. There is a reason why it all feels nuts, aside from it being mid-fashion week.

Sara: Wait, that’s insane! I remember Lena Dunham ‘gramming bout that a few months ago, so I thought we were done with that ish.

Alyssa: My friend Cecilia (who is the coolest hairstylist ever so I trust her) actually just told me we have six coming up in 2015.

Emily: On that same thread, Stephen Hawkings also mentioned how the God particle he’s working with could destroy the entire universe AT ANY MOMENT HAHA. Just weird vibes all around today.

Sara: I READ THAT TOO!

Alyssa: What.

Emily: Apparently (ginger kid voice) we don’t have the machines big enough for it to collapse the entire universe, but if Stephen Hawkings talks about potential universal doom, I’m going to pay attention.

Important alert: Watch this:

Alyssa: Well, apparently, we just all need to keep an eye out this week circa Super Moon. So now you know why you’ve been weepy. Someone (wish I could remember who) tweeted that her NYFW survival tactic was to pretend every day is Wednesday. So I’ve been trying that.

Emily: I had a more chill day today as well but really happy I got to see the Tommy Hilfiger show! The stage was set like the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover, and Beatles songs played before the show started. Then when the models finally came out the playlist changed to include songs by Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones with a live band playing. Maybe it’s because that’s some of my favorite music but I absolutely loved it and thought it gave an awesome energy to the show.

Alyssa: I love good show music. There’s so much about seeing a show in person that helps in understanding the collection. You gotta feel the whole vibe! I have so many good songs stuck in my head now from this week…

Okay so it wasn’t a show, but a presentation, but you guys, Theory was really good! So chic, really beautiful. Just simple, clean, so well done, so nicely staged. Just… sigh.

Emily: Yes! I loved Theory as well. It was presented really well and felt like a cool art exhibit.

Alyssa: So who wins, Snoopy or Theory?

Sara: SNOOPY!

Alyssa: My vote’s for Theory…

Adele’s signature lashes garnish the singer’s Fendi Peekaboo iteration.

In conjunction with the May opening of Fendi’s London latest (on New Bond Street if you’re in the area,) the Italian fashion house announced its collaboration with 9 iconic women, asking the celebs to personalize a Peekaboo. Modelology: Constance & Jacquelyn, a Tale of Two Jablonski’s

As magazines and dedicated model websites are quick to note, Constance (pictured left) and Jacquelyn (right) Jablonski are not related. But can a shared name bring shared success? With parallel rises to It Girl status during the last two fashion seasons, I can’t help but surmise that their successes are related.

After all, it is human nature to want to put things into boxes—”That band sounds a lot like Bowie” or “The film was very Hitchcockian.” It’s how our minds work and the fashion industry is notorious for relying on these easy categorizations to create sweeping phenomena. They created the need for Brazilians to walk the catwalks after realizing we really, really liked the way Gisele looked in the early 2000’s. Sasha Pivovarova was named ‘Baby Gemma’ following the success of look-alike Ward, even scooping up some of Gemma’s former contracts. Lara Stone is a force of nature in her own right, but that doesn’t keep people from dubbing Georgia May Jagger her successor—and naming both of them Brigitte Bardot 2.0.

It’s true that the similarities the Jablonskis share—breaking out simultaneously in September, 2009, scoring lucrative ad contracts with D&G, making toplists for the best new faces in 2009, shooting for W and Marie Claire—do not make up for the fact that Constance is Parisian and Jacquelyn is from New Jersey, that Constance is two years older and has blond hair while Jacquelyn boasts raven locks, and that, after signing a major contract with Estee Lauder this spring, Constance is a bit more successful than her same-named friend. But don’t be surprised if you see Jacquelyn following Constance’s footsteps very closely. It’s just easier for everyone to say “both of them” when they’re asked “Which Jablonski?”
