Like the city he hails from, Michael Capponi’s life is a story of triumph over adversity. Credited as the man who helped land Miami’s South Beach on the jet-set party map by promotiing such influential nightclubs as Warsaw and B.E.D. Miami, Capponi battled addiction and health problems until a successful stint in rehab gave him a new lease on life. His career has taken off from there, with his development company, Capponi Group, and club ventures like The Wall at W South Beach, and pool parties at the Mondrian. But after spending months in Haiti assisting with the 2010 earthquake recovery effort, Capponi decided to build a hotel there, creating a world-class destination for vacationers, while giving locals opportunities to rebuild their lives as he himself has done.
The 8.9 magnitude earthquake that shook Japan this morning triggered tsunami warnings as far as Hawaii and the West Coast of the U.S. Late night talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel, just so happened to be vacationing in French Polynesia when the quake struck, and he immediately began tweeting updates from the island. His first tweet “Suddenly, relaxing on an island in the South Pacific isn’t so relaxing anymore. Good thing I brought my aqua stilts,” was met with angry replies from followers who didn’t realize that he wasn’t joking—for once. “Not kidding. That’s where I am,” he wrote. “…and I’ll accept the apologies from everyone who called me an asshole and said “fuck you” in advance.”
Over the next few hours, Kimmel continued to update his followers with a series of tweets, as he began to sound more and more worried:
“I am on an island in French Polynesia, glued to CNN”
“thanks to those who sent good wishes – this is crazy”
“thanks again for the concern – I am now worried others will worry if I don’t tweet – but if I don’t, don’t.”
In his final two tsunami-related tweets, he responded to a user who questioned how scared he was on a scale of 1-10, “a good solid 7. on a small island, with no high ground,” he replied. Kimmel was finally evacuated from the island early this morning. “we are evacuating the island. dogspeed.”
