Johnny Depp for Dior and 10 Other Ad Campaigns Featuring Hot Older Celebs

Johnny Depp courtesy of Dior

From David Bowie for Louis Vuitton to John Stamos for Dannon Greek yogurt, 10 campaigns featuring hot older celebs we love.

Johnny Depp — there’s a face we don’t see enough. For the first time, the actor has signed on as the face of a fragrance, and Dior is the house lucky enough to take him on. The scent, the house’s first of its kind in ten years, is composed by Dior perfumer François Demachy and is due out in September, closer to when the name and campaign will be revealed.

But enough about the fragrance, at least until closer to launch…we’re excited about Johnny Depp for Dior, and it’s making us want to take a look back at the other hot celebs featured in campaigns. Yes, ladies like Cher and Joan Didion have been in the spotlight as of late, but the guys have always been around. So it’s time to take a minute to appreciate these 10 campaigns featuring our favorite, more mature leading men.

New Chanel Spa at the Ritz + 3 Luxury Hotel Spas to Visit Now

Chanel spring 2015 beauty collection, courtesy of Chanel

When the new Chanel spa opens its doors at the end of the year at the Ritz in Paris, it’ll join three other of the world’s best in-hotel luxury spas.

It’s been three years since renovation began on the Ritz Paris in 2012, and three years that we’ve lived without entering the hallowed, decorated halls and rooms. Now when its doors reopen at the end of 2015, there’ll be a few extraordinary things in addition: a Coco Chanel-inspired suite (the designer herself had lived there for 34 years, and the décor will reflect her taste,) and Chanel au Ritz Paris, a Chanel spa committed to the house’s line up of skincare and beauty.

This venture is Chanel’s first foray into spa territory, and who can think of anywhere better to start than the Ritz? By taking a coveted, luxurious skincare product and spinning it into what we can only imagine to be a divine experience, Chanel is only going to make us want its creams, serums, scrubs and treatments even more than we already do. It’s elevating the elevated, and with products available at any Chanel counter or store, replicating the spa experience at home won’t be too difficult. It’ll just take a quick trip to Chanel au Ritz Paris for a “tutorial”. Traveling to Paris for spa day reconnaissance in the name of self-preservation? Count us in. No word on whether Creative Makeup and Color designer Lucia Pica will be designing any Ritz-exclusive beauty looks for after-facial application, but with or without it, let’s hope Chanel brings its spas stateside (we have a Ritz right here in New York, you know.)

While we wait for the Chanel spa to open at the Ritz later this year, here are three other sumptuous hotel spas that partnered with luxury brands and houses, making for the most indulgent spa experiences around.

Banish Winter Woes and Hydrate Your Skin: This Easy Extra Skin-Care Step is 100% Worth It

Step One:

If you haven’t added a serum to your skincare regimen yet, a hydrating formula might be the way to go. While the prospect of adding more to your “self-care to-do list” can be daunting–ever feel like you barely have time to shower?–serum shouldn’t be. Not only do these little elixirs deliver major benefits to our skin in 30 seconds, but due to their light, watery textures they also feel really good. Truly, enjoy this micro-spa experience.

Oils, two of which are featured here also pack that little punch of DIY luxury. Rodin Olio Lusso and Caudalie’s are both are luxe as they come. A perfect opportunity to end the day with a little massage.

Insta-Critic: Chanel, à la Brasserie

Coffee with Coco, or Karl would top many a fashion person’s bucket list, to be sure. And for some editors etcetera the chance presented itself this morning, No expense was spared in giving the Grand Palais a Chanel level makeover by which it became Brasserie Gabrielle, a place where impossibly leggy and chic models (you know the drill by now…Kendall, Cara, Joan…). As for the clothes, they served as a chic reminder that lunch is reason enough to look chic. Oh, and the shoes. Well, suddenly I desperately want a (very sensible and easily justifiable!) pair of two-toned sling-backs à la my grandmother.

Karl Schedules a Show for the Same Date as the Met Ball… So, Would You Rather: Chanel or Vogue?

Photo: Julian Mackler/

It’s a fashionista’s scheduling nightmare, and the morbid dream is coming to reality quicker than the stitching of a Chanel tweed suit. What happens when the matriarch and patriarch of the fashion industry, Anna Wintour of American Vogue and Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel throw events on the same day in different countries? We will soon find out, because apparently May 4th is fashion’s hottest date.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2015 Anna Wintour Costume Center Exhibition Gala has been the hottest ticket in New York since Wintour first organized it back in 1995. But that ticket could soon lose its shine as Chanel’s always elaborate cruise show is being held in Seoul, the exact same day.

Where will the editors go? What will the top models do? Will Rihanna be sitting front row in Korea or tripping in Tom Ford up the steps of the Met? Which one would you rather attend? The $25,000 a plate Met Gala or front row at one of the years hottest shows? Anna, if Kendall or Cara are too busy walking in the Chanel show I am always available to be a seat filler.

More metallic for the bride, this time deliberately and on the runway. Schiaparelli couture is shaking up bridal with gold lamé and — we like this — an afro.

A Smudge-Free Glittery Eye to Ring in The New Year

The end of 2014 is fast-approaching and we can think of no better way than to express our optimism for the 15th year of the millenium than to ring it in with gleaming, glittery eyes. Sparkly makeup as metaphor–what a concept!

However, we’ll keep the glitz to our eyes because glitter dripping down our face, or stuck to our clothes, etc. etc. is not so cute.

K, let’s go.

Step One: Prime

Have some fun (because it’s just the base) applying eyeshadow primer.

primer eye

Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden is good for a bit of illumination underneath everything else and Nars Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base is good for staying power. You could even combine the two to reap all the benefits.

Now, for the fun part…

In our holiday beauty series, we’ve discussed eyeliners that can handle tears, lipsticks made for making out, and skin that glows no matter how low the temperature drops–but our NYE eye installment is our most artistic yet. Think of your eyelids as little canvases with an infinite number of possibilities. Dark and smokey, bright and colorful, or pure, pure glitz. All are a GO for this particular debaucherous evening.

Step Two: A Smooth, Shimmery Lid

No matter how many layers and colors you plan to pile on (it’s fine, the more the merrier for this evening) you need a solid shimmery base. The options are countless, so I’ve picked favorites based on application method, because once you find what works for you, it’s smooth sailing forward.

Here are some of our favorites:

You can see (below) just how creamy Tom Ford’s Platinum Cream Color is, making it a perfect base.

tom ford

If powders are more your game, then there are endless palettes to play with. Plus, nothing like a gorgeous palette in hand to make you rock being your own glam squad.

gold 2

Estée Lauder’s Pure Color Envy Sculpting Eyeshadow 5-Color Palette in “Infamous Sky” has a perfect light base shade as well as two darker metallics.

esteeChanel’s Les 4 Ombres Multi-Effect Quadra Eyeshadow in 226 TISSÉ RIVOLI also has 4 super shimmery neutrals, any of which can stand alone or work as a dramatic first layer.

Step Three: Add Depth, Smoke, or Color

Of course, both above palettes have darker colors for adding depth but because more palettes=more fun, here are my favorites for adding the smoke-factor.

charlotte burberry

Charlotte Tilbury’s Fallen Angel palette is star-studded (literally) and clutch-sized. If you’re going for the tawny side of smoky, Tilbury’s palette is a perfect pick.

Screen Shot 2015-01-05 at 9.59.19 AM

Burberry’s Smokey Eye palette is classic smokeshow–the kind of palette I like to imagine Alexa Chung keeps on hand. It ranges from that illuminating neutral to its deep but shimmery grey and matte black.

…If Powders and Creams Aren’t Doing it For You

One of my favorite makeup discoveries of the last year has been the almost foolproof dual-use eyeshadow/liner sticks made best by ByTerry and Trish McEvoy. I’ve been hoarding these and they’ve made me feel far more capable of the multi-colored looks seen in glossies for nights that call for our most skilled makeup artistry.

I love these things:

Depending on the shade you pick, these can be used as a base or a detail.

Screen Shot 2014-12-30 at 1.27.13 PM

ByTerry’s Ombre Blackstar in Frozen Quartz is an easy base color, but the addition of a quick stripe of the same product in Blue Obsession takes the look instantly into nighttime territory.

Screen Shot 2015-01-05 at 9.59.01 AM

Trish McEvoy’s 24-Hour Eye Shadow and Liner in Crystal Grey is one of the easiest and fastest routes to a more complicated looking smokey eye I’ve discovered.

…And for the Glitter Girls

If all of the above seems downright tame for you, hold tight, because we’ve got you covered too.

For those of you who’ve committed to sparkle tomorrow night, the obvious choice is Urban Decay’s Moondust eyeshadow (pictured here in MOONSPOON) for unadulterated glam (what we’ve come to expect from the brand).

Screen Shot 2014-12-30 at 1.41.26 PM

For a touch of glitter in it’s purest form, try Urban Decay’s classic Heavy Metal glitter liners.

Chanel Has a New Global Creative Make-up and Color Designer

Lucia Pica. Photo: Courtesy of Chanel

Those are some big Chanel shoes to fill; Peter Philips, now creative and image director for Dior, left Chanel for Dior about nine months ago, and it has taken until now for the French house to announce its newest arrival. Italian freelancer makeup artist Lucia Pica will take Philips’ place at Chanel on January 1, 2015.

In a press release Chanel said, “A freelance Make-up Artist since 2008, Lucia Pica is a prominent member of a new generation of Image Makers that are taking Beauty and Fashion into the future.
She brings to CHANEL her creativity, her distinctive color expertise and her modern interpretation of Beauty.”

We can’t wait to see what she does.

10 Times Katy Perry Was the Coolest Girl at the Party

Photo: David X Prutting/

She’s may have the eye of the tiger, but she also has the eye of every partygoer when she walks in. Katy Perry is just a fun girl; she changes the color of her hair as often as Justin and Selena break up — a lot — she sings about kissing girls, and jumps off bars in college towns. She’s the friend that always knows how to have a good time yet can uplift you and let you know you’re a firework. That’s why she’s always the coolest girl at the party.
