Prema Is Absolutely Your New Favorite NYC Salon

Lower East Side mainstay and BlackBook favorite Prema has a new couple in charge. Hair and makeup gurus-turned-married couple Nick and Gregg Lennon Jr. have taken over Prema’s Lower East Side location, with the goal of turning the space into a haven for all of the city’s coolest creatives.

Launched in 2004 by Francesco Ruggerino with its first location in Bondi, Australia, Prema has been a radical force in the industry for over a decade. With two locations in Australia (Bondi and Surry Hills), the salon set up shop on Stanton Street in 2014. Walking through the neighborhood, there’s no shortage of quirky hair salons; but there’s none like Prema anywhere in the city.

To celebrate their appointment last month, Gregg and Nick threw a “Paint It Black” party in which the space got its ’80s goth makeover. With all black everything and a giant painting of Edward Scissorhands, it’s no wonder Prema is the go-to salon for some of NYC’s freaks, influencers and artists.

But it’s not just the top of the line stylists and unforgettable vibe that make Prema our new staple. As part of the queer community, Gregg and Nick are dedicated to making the salon an all-inclusive and safe space rooted in community activism. The duo plans to initiate “salon nights” at the salon, in which members of the community can come together for events and to engage in creative conversations. In the future, the partners also plan to produce events in which proceeds will benefit different LGBTQ charities.

Since its opening in 2004, Prema has developed a reputation for creating cutting edge looks with unique products, including Ruggerino’s own line, ANTI, (which is sold at the salon) and an innovative aesthetic. The owner has brought the same ethos to the Lower East Side, with the help of Gregg, Nick, and their team of leading stylists.

Prema is located at 101 Stanton Street in the Lower East Side. The salon is open Tuesday through Friday from 11AM to 9PM, and until 7PM on Saturday and Sunday.

YSL Beauty Casts Zoë Kravitz in Bold, Black-and-White Campaign

Photo via Instagram

“YSL Beauty has always been one of my favorite brands,” says actress and Lolawolf pack leader ZoĂ« Kravitz, announcing her partnership with the timeless fashion house. “Nothing is forced, nothing is fake, but everything is bold, strong and unafraid.”

The news arrived with three black-and-white photos, as YSL Beauty mused about the 27-year-old’s “talented, cool and free-spirited” energy. “She embodies the YSL Beauty woman and the brand’s vision of beauty,” they said. “We are proud to announce that the new U.S. YSL Beauty muse is the amazing actress and singer ZoĂ« Kravitz.”

This casting follows Balenciaga, which also recruited Kravitz for their spring ’16 campaign alongside German model Anna Ewers, though YSL Beauty’s will exist exclusively on social media. Without giving away any spoilers, the brand revealed that Kravitz’s partnership will include a video project, some music and “lots of makeup looks.”

HBD Frida Kahlo! 8 Beauty Looks Inspired by the Queen of Self-Portraiture

Frida Kahlo inspired millions — she still does — not only with her work and art, but also with her iconic look. She immortalized her own beauty via a bevy of self portraits. Who knew we’d be into the unibrow in 2015? She makes us want to pull it off — models, make up artists, and the normal gals (us) today are still striving to embrace and mimic her non-normative beauty.

From bold brows to flower crowns and middle parts, her look still inspires the fashion and Instagram world. Like her self portraits, Kahlo-beauty is pervasive. Thank you for showing us the way Frida and happy, would be 108th birthday!

11 Tricks To Fool Everyone Into Thinking You Actually Showered Today

Photo: Courtesy of Byredo

Want to get carded? Check out 5 fast ways to look under 21.

No time to shower? No problem.

The latest from fragrance brand Byredo is a hair perfume, released in three of the brand’s classic scents.

hair perfume

1. The “long lasting scents…subtly diffuse throughout the day, amplified by the natural movement of the hair,” the brand said in a press release. “Each hair perfume combines one of BYREDO’s signature scents with a unique silicone and polymer formula to create a light, invisible veil designed to leave the hair nourished and luminous whilst divinely scented.” So, if you’ve ever faux-casually sniffed your hair whilst running out the door and hoping no one notices the smell of shampoo has long since left your hair, the solution is here.

2. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily conquer grease. And since we can’t all be Kimmy K, with five-day plans and glam squads for each level of natural grease our hair encounters post-wash, some of us reach for products that can do it all.

Consensus rules that if messy hair is in, by all means run with it. A little dry shampoo spray with texturizing properties is your best friend. Zhush it up, have some fun with it and be your bad self. No shower, no problem. Recommended: Oribe’s Dry Texturizing Spray

3. Skip the sink and get your face clean with the best facial wipes we’ve ever found–a true BlackBook fave–Koh Gen Do’s Cleansing Spa Water Cloths.

4. It’s never a bad idea to start the day with a facial mist and having tried MANY, Tata Harper’s is a tried-and-true favorite.

Screen Shot 2015-03-13 at 12.19.13 PM

Even if Tata’s mist didn’t  have hyaluronic acid and brighten skin, I’d still spray it on like crack for it’s smell and ability to feel like an instant refresh!

5. Moving down, along the face, quick reminder. There is no excuse not to brush your teeth. There is an excuse to be kind of childish about it and wish it didn’t suck or bore you or whatever. Enter Foreo’s new Issa toothbrush. Because we should all have chic Swedish designed silicone toothbrushes, ya know?

6. Sometimes when we don’t shower, we decide to take not showering UP A NOTCH. Because why not. Should you decide to skip to the cute little local barre studio, (which obviously does not have shower accommodations), break a bit of a sweat, and then head to your next meeting like nothing happened, allow me to introduce you to your new best friend: The Shower Pill. Like baby wipes but for sweaty, lazy, post-work-out adults.

7. Another no-cheat zone? (let’s be courteous, if unclean)–pits. Dove’s new dry spray deodorant is a must have because who even has time to use a stick anymore!? No risk of icky stains either.

Screen Shot 2015-03-13 at 12.36.28 PM

8. Before you go: smear on a little something to help keep your skin in check–Bioelements Oil Control Mattifier.

Screen Shot 2015-03-13 at 1.24.51 PM

And, one for the road: Tatcha’s Original Aburatorigami Blotting Papers. Because oily is not chic–and they won’t even mess up your makeup.

9. Get your glow courtesy of Dr. Dennis Gross’s Alpha Beta Glow pad which gets your face looking naturally glowy (and streak-free) within 1-3 hours of application.

Screen Shot 2015-03-13 at 1.23.57 PM

10. Finish it off with Eve Lom’s new Radiant Glow Cream Foundation–compact, with SPF 30, and ready to throw in your bag.

Screen Shot 2015-03-13 at 1.29.01 PM

11. Finish it off with an oldie-but-goodie–because what other fragrance would you pick when hiding your unshowered-ness? Add a spritz of the appropriately named CLEAN’s Shower Fresh.

How to Get the Most Perfect “Not-Thought-About” Hair Seen at Coach

Photos by Lucas Flores Piran for Redken

See every look from the Coach FW15 show here

“There’s this sort of coolness about natural hair, and we’ll probably see a lot of it this season because it feels very modern.”

So says Guido Palau, Redken‘s global styling director, and master of hair at today’s Coach show. From the moment the first model stepped out wearing Stuart Vevers‘ fall 2015 designs for the brand, it was apparent just how cool the look was to be. There’s nothing fussy about it, nothing at all try-hard — the greatness of this look is that it works on every gal’s hair, because the end desired result is unique to you.

In a press release, Guido explains how aimed to keep the hair as natural as possible.

“[I] really played up the individual personalities of the girls. A lot of the shows this season want to keep the girls’ personalities — they don’t want armies.”

So how to get this individually unique, totally ideal, insouciant and cool hair?

1. Wash hair, allowing it to air dry. (Guido used sulphate-free Frizz Dismiss shampoo and conditioner from Redken.)

2. Create a part just off center to keep it just “not-thought-about” without getting messy.

3. Smooth a touch of cream for shine near the roots (Guido used Redken’s move ability 05.)

That’s it, there’s nothing else to it. Stick straight, with a bend, wavy, curly, and so on, this is the kind of styling that truly looks good all around.

MANGA EYES! Peter Philips Brings the Anime out of Every Model at Dior

Peter Philips, the creative and image director for Dior makeup, has been a longtime favorite of ours. His work at Chanel was nothing short of aspirational — his is the kind of talent that sends products flying off shelves. Now at Dior, Philips is still dazzling, but perhaps working with Raf is slightly different than with Karl. The pre fall look is… experimental, to be sure. Philips seemed to draw inspiration from the location of the show — Tokyo — because it’s hard not to see the influence that Manga has had here.

ELODIA_51U5223_72DPI

“I wanted to design a make-up look that had a very strong visual impact, focusing on an ‘electric’ eye that was both graphic and abstract. I was mainly inspired by Kabuki make-up with its codified, dramatic aesthetic that plays on the abstract nature of this visual strangeness. I also wanted to create a play on light to reflect the shiny, glittery elements that were omnipresent throughout this Pre-Fall collection and that give the make-up look a slightly Manga feel,”

Philips said in a press release.

Should you want to get the look yourself, you’ll need a liner (the Diorshow pro liner used here isn’t available ’til June 2015) and Diorshow mascara, both in black. Oh, and some “jumbo sized” glitter and a touch of eyelash glue.

1. Starting directly above the iris, apply the black liner in a box shape from the lash line to the upper eyelid.

2. Use mascara to coat only the lashes touched by the box you’ve made with the liner. Leave everything else bare.

3. If you’re feeling futuristic, apply a few pieces of oversized glitter near the upper lash line. It’ll “catch the light
creating a spectacular ‘robotic’ glitter effect,” said Philips.

Amp Up Your Stare and Make ‘Em Green with Envy

Josilyn (DNA) stays warm in a Burberry blanket scarf

Wanna make ’em green with envy? Sometimes the best translation is a literal one.

Like Anna Sui and Topshop Unique whose FW14 runway models sported emerald on their lids, we’re reaching for the pot of green gold this season. We’re particularly enamored with Gucci’s eyeshadow in Iconic Ottanio.

Let the rest be jealous — get your own green eyes here.

Naked Versus Nude: The Hot Lip Look of the Season

Designers from Givenchy to Versace sent models stalking down their fall runways sporting something a bit naked… it wasn’t that the lips had nothing on them at all, but they were definitely nude.

Think a swipe of flattering, elegant, subtle color, not too far off from your own.

Whatever your skin tone, there’s a shade out there to enhance it. Check out some of our favorites below:

Get a Naturally Glowing Complexion with 8 Tips from Indie Lee

Daylight savings has passed, it’s practically dark before 4 p.m., and my face has already turned its seasonal hue of on-the-brink-of-chapped-red–winter is coming. Thanks to natural beauty guru Indie Lee, we’re ready to be hydrated and glowy no matter what the Polar Vortex/Bomb Cyclone hurdles our way.

indie lee

1. Beware of Overwashing

Since your skin is already predisposed to dryness in the winter, it’s important not to over-wash or tone it. “Choose a gentle cleanser (like our Rosehip Cleanser), that will cleanse without drying or stripping skin of natural oils and nutrients that it needs,” Lee advises.

2. Mo’ Moisture

Fall and winter–not the time to slack off on your moisturizing routine! Remember to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. If your skin gets dry and you need to moisturize more than once a day, there are great low-maintenance options available (like Lee’s Unscented Body Lotion) that offer a blend of shea butter, calendula and jojoba to keep skin supple without any added fragrance (so you aren’t overdoing it on the scents with multiple applications).

Indie Lee's Unscented Body Lotion

3. Extra H20

Keep skin both hydrated both inside and out. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. “I love drinking warm water with a lemon wedge at my desk!” Lee says.

4. Skincare On-the-Go

“Keep backup moisturizers at your desk and in your car as reminders to take extra care when the air is cold outside,” Lee says. Too often, we forget until the damage has been done.

5. Happy Hands

Our hands take a beating and we often ignore them until it’s freezing out. Even if the freezing temps haven’t hit yet, it still might be time to take the gloves out. Even if the temps aren’t plummeting yet, now might be a good time to bust out the fingerless gloves (like the ones shown here!)

6. Oil, Oil, Oil

Indie Lee's Oil Trio

These are a few super-hydrating oils to look for as ingredients in your winter skincare moisturizers: Apricot Kernel Oil (Prunus Armeniaca), Coconut Oil (Cocos Nucifera), Evening Primrose Seed Oil (Oenothera Biennis), Avocado Oil (Persea Americana).

7. No Alcohol–On Your Face

Instead of using an alcohol-based eye makeup remover (that will strip skin of necessary nutrients), choose a multi-tasking cleanser or eye balm to help remove unwanted makeup (and give a boost of nutrients where they’re needed most)!

8. Salve Your Problems

Treat extra dry spots (like heels, elbows and hands) with a body salve before bed. It has humectant properties that will help better hydrate overnight.
