Going HAOMA: Six Steps to Natural / Plant-Based Health + Beauty

There’s a thinking that goes that every tragedy carries the seeds of enlightenment. And while our most imperative task during the corona crisis is to stay indoors to slow the spread of the virus, we should also use the time to consider small changes that may offer long-term improvement to our lives once this is all behind us.

Now, few would argue against the benefits of moving towards more plant-centric habits in our daily routines—and not just when it comes to eating. The beauty world has also been reshaping the way we tend to the health of our appearance and the appearance of our health—and suddenly CBD is leading the revolution. New York based HAOMA is one of the newest, founded by cannabis entrepreneur Jason Osni and beauty industry veteran Doreen Hatcher (Kiehls, Origins). But not just another CBD brand, rather it was birthed from the belief that plant based products in the overall can lead to a more complete mind/body health outlook and lifestyle.

Indeed, HAOMA’s holistic approach is more than just sloganeering—but rather blends art and science (remember science?), while adhering to vegan friendly and FSC—Forest Stewardship Council—approved standards, using only the best quality adaptogenic plant and earth-based ingredients. Their Cannabidiol line includes products like the Radiant Face Serum, Nourishing Cleansing Balm, Preservation Day Cream, Recovery Night Cream and Calming Temple Balm…decisively accommodating a total beauty regime.

In normal times, HAOMA is sold at Neiman Marcus and Vince stores across the country—but during this sheltering-in period, you can still shop for all their products at HAOMAearth.com.

And since caring for our overall health is more imperative than ever during the stress of quarantine, HAOMA Resident Herbalist Brennan Courtney was kind enough to share her daily routine, so that we might emerge from all of this as fit and ready as possible.

Six Steps to Plant Based Beauty with HAOMA’s Resident Herbalist Brennan Courtney

Step 1. Start your day with a plant-based probiotic and hot lemon water.

This small commitment first thing in the morning has made a dramatic difference in my energy levels and the health of my skin. Lemon water jump starts metabolism, balances pH and is packed with Vitamin C, potassium, phosphorus and magnesium. When taken regularly, probiotics have been shown to improve digestion, mood, immunity, reproductive and heart health.  Two of my favorites are Seed and Ion* Biome.

Step 2. Make an herbal infusion to sip throughout the day.

The potent, long steeped infusion of a single, mineral-rich herb is truly a miracle in its simplicity. Some favorites: Oatstraw, Red Raspberry, Nettle…all are affordable and easily accessible through trusted organic suppliers such as Mountain Rose. Just bring a quart of filtered water to a boil on the stove then place a hefty handful’s worth of herbs into a heat-safe vessel.(If you’re a person who likes exact measurements, we’re shooting for 1 weighted ounce of plant material.) When the water has just begun to boil, turn off the heat and pour the water over the herbs, stir to combine and saturate all plant material. Leave this infusion overnight and strain in the morning. Enjoy throughout the day chilled, room temperature, or warm—but be sure to refrigerate the strained infusion and consume within 36 hours for maximum freshness. Repeat daily, swapping out herbs to get a wide spectrum of bioavailable minerals incorporated into your weekly routine.

Step 3. Take time to connect with the natural world.

An important part of holistic, plant-based beauty is communing with live plants. I recommend making a regular habit of simply sitting in nature or among plants in your home or in the garden. It is immensely healing to experience nature as a simple act of being: Walking barefoot on cool, dew-covered grass. Spending time near natural bodies of water. Witnessing the change of seasons, who’s sowing seeds, who’s evolving into inflorescence, who’s returning their vital force back to the earth and who’s bursting forth. The goal is to become so immersed that you experience that moment of subtle transcendence to oneness, when you are no longer something that is separate from your surroundings.

Step 4. Incorporate Plants into your Diet

Dark leafy greens are rich in vitamins A & E, supporting a healthy complexion and alkalizing the body. A variety of seeds(flax, sunflower, pumpkin, chia, hemp) contain rich essential fatty acids and selenium, helping to build healthy hair, skin and nails. To accompany these two staples, I rotate seasonally available fruits and vegetables, both cooked and raw, making sure to have as many colors represented as possible, to get a wide range of polyphenols and antioxidants. I dress it with my homemade wild greens vinegar and top with avocado and sea salt. Pair with sprouted grains or beans for extra protein.

Step 5. Take an Herbal Bath

Bathing can be so comforting to body and soul. By incorporating botanicals, salts, essences and aromatherapy, the experience can be deeply restorative. Start by making a large pot of simmering herbs on the stove, on a low setting, covered: lavender, chamomile, lemon balm, violet leaf. Purify the tub by scrubbing it down with coarse salt and a few splashes of distilled vinegar. As the tub is filling, strain the herbal tea into a container that’s easy to carry, and then pour the tea directly into the bath. When I enter the bath, I visualize my stress, my doubts and my worries are being washed away. I use this as a time to focus awareness on my physical body and detach from thoughts and expectations. Some other attributes for intentional bathing include: salts, seaweed, essential oils(avoid peppermint in the tub!), flower and gem essences, freshly picked blossoms or flower petals, and stones.  Consider this a sacred art and lean into whatever feels right intuitively.

Step 6. Dial in your evening routine.

Some of the most important reparative work happens while you sleep.  My evening ritual starts with HAOMA’s Nourishing Cleansing Balm. It goes on like honey onto dry skin and warms under my fingertips as I massage it all over my face and neck. It’s so nourishing, the scent is heavenly and my skin feels smooth, clean and refreshed—with no residue or need for double cleansing. To remove, use a warm, wet face cloth(A couple of times a week I leave it on as a mask for 8-10 minutes to really let it sink in. This cannabidiol + botanical formula is incredibly calming for redness and irritation.) I follow this up with our Radiant Face Serum and Recovery Night Cream. The serum is packed with antioxidants and micronutrients, I can feel my skin practically savoring the lightweight formula as it absorbs. The night cream, with its calming blend of Skullcap, Lavender and Chamomile, feels rich and soothing and has made a dramatic difference in how my skin holds onto moisture, thanks to the abundant Sodium Hyaluronate content. Without fail, I wake up feeling and looking refreshed.
