Torinos make room for chocolate, even in their coffees. This traditional bicerin coffee is made like a layer cake — first a fat lot of drinking chocolate layered on top with a heft of espresso, then topped with fresh whipped cream. The trick (so they say) is to stir it three times, then drink. Or you could peel it apart like an Oreo cookie and eat each layer at a time. To make it a little more interesting, add rum to the espresso layer. The birthplace of this sweet drink is Turin’s Caffe al Bicerin.
Bicerin • 1 cup drinking chocolate (hot) • 2 shots espresso • layer of cream to taste • shot of rum (if desired) €4.50.
