It was so hot inside Sunday’s Teen Choice Awards that Achy Breaky daughter Miley Cyrus was forced to strip to hot pants and ankle booties and uneasily grind a stripper pole-outfitted ice cream truck, while breathlessly screeching a newfangled “Born in the U.S.A.” And just what was Hannah Montana hawking from her converted Mister Softee? Booze-sicles!
The perfect dog day treat, adult popsicles are in and of themselves reason enough for a house party. If there’s something wrong with you and you’re not into jailbait, gourmand flavors like Meyer Lemon Vodka Creamsicle and Kiwi Margarita Pop, at least sound grownup. The only thing better than a frozen cocktail is a frozen cocktail on a stick.
Meyer Lemon Vodka Creamsicles 1. Completely zest five Meyer lemons. 2. Combine lemon zest, 2 cups heavy cream, 2 cups whole milk, 1 cup white sugar, and 1/4 tsp salt in a large saucepan. 3. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring to dissolve sugar. 4. Remove from heat and steep at room temperature for 20 minutes, occasionally stirring. 5. Juice the five zest-less lemons, and stir juice into cream mixture. 6. Stir in 4 tablespoons citrus vodka. 7. Divide mixture among 15 3-oz Dixie cups. 8. Cut small squares of tinfoil to cover the top of each cup. Using a sharp knife cut small slits in the tinfoil tops and insert popsicle sticks. 9. Place cups in flat-bottomed container and freeze overnight or until completely set. 10. Peel off paper cups and foil. Yields 15 cream pops.
Kiwi Margarita Pops 1. In a large mixing bowl combine 2 cups puréed kiwi, 2/3 cup white sugar, and 1/4 cup lime juice. Stir until sugar is dissolved. 2. Stir in 3 ounces tequila and 1 ounce Cointreau. 3. Layer the bottom of 10 3-oz Dixie cups with the fruit of 4 sliced kiwis. 4. Pour mixture over top of kiwi slices, dividing among the 10 cups. 5. Cut small squares of tinfoil to cover the top of each cup. Using a sharp knife cut small slits in the tinfoil tops and insert popsicle sticks. 6. Place cups in flat-bottomed container and freeze overnight or until completely set. 7. Peel off foil and paper cups. Yields 10 kiwi pops.
