Helen Mirren hasn’t slowed down one bit since taking home the Oscar in February. She recently finished National Treasure: Book of Secrets with Nic Cage, scheduled for a Christmas release, and is about to start a movie called Love Ranch, directed by husband Taylor Hackford (about a Vegas whorehouse in the ’70s). What’s more, she has a book coming out this March called In the Frame: My Life in Words and Pictures. “When they asked me to do it,” said Dame Helen recently, “I thought, well, I’ll do all pictures, because I love pictures, and I’ll write as little as I can. They asked for 20,000 words. So I started writing. And at 56,000, they were begging me to stop!”
Asked about the song that Jack Black, Will Ferrell, and John C. Reilly sang at last year’s Oscars, in which they said they wanted to “go home with Helen Mirren,” she tells a great story: “Jack Black came up to me afterwards and apologized. I said, “Don’t you dare apologize! That’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever said about me!” Merle Ginsberg
