It’s been a bad week for large aquatic species and the people who confine them in small commercial spaces. First, the deadly killer whale attack at Sea World and now this: A huge, shark-filled aquarium in a Dubai shopping mall has sprung a leak.
Both the aquarium and the shopping mall were evacuated for engineers to fix the 10-million-liter tank. The aquarium sits on the bottom floor of the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, which, as you may recall had some technical difficulties with its elevators earlier this month. Officials say the leak was immediately fixed by the maintenance team and the safety of the animals wasn’t compromised. Lesson learned this week: shark aquariums in ginormous shopping malls in the desert are safer than killer whale shows in Orlando.
