West Hollywood Gets a New Design Fair

Despite its distinctly American sprawl, greater Los Angeles has always harboured its share of Euro predilections: a taste for Italian food bordering on the fetishistic and shameless musical Anglophilia, to name but two.

Playing to theme is the intriguingly titled A Street Af(fair), a European style outdoor design marketplace, scheduled to make its debut this April 30. Fittingly, the fair will focus not on just Cali Modernism, but also on Euro influenced Hollywood Glam. Thus, devotees of both sophisticated understatement and opulent overstatement will be well served.

PAX Ceramics will be amongst the participants, and Founder Mia Herron Kantor enlightens that LA, “lends itself to a lot of experimentation and freedom for artists and designers. It’s an exciting time to be working and living in such a culturally and geographically diverse city.”

Curated by Downtown’s venerable Parachute Market, the single day event will take over North Almont Drive—between Melrose and Santa Monica—and feature furniture, tableware, even a few sexy intimates. It’s free to the public, but best to arrive with plenty of purchasing power.

Conceptual artist and jewelry designer Allie Pohl will also exhibit, and enthuses of the event, “I think anytime people are exposed to new designs, new concepts, and new ways of thinking, the community is enlightened.” We offer a peek into some of the participants:

Modern Resale

With a noticeable penchant for the titans of Italian design (Cassina, Minotti, B&B, Cappelini), Modern Resale is a mecca for 20th Century aficionados. And as both a buyer’s and seller’s market, prices for iconic pieces are surprisingly attainable.

Ideal Woman

Allie Pohl’s jewelry designs, which began as a riposte to the absurdity of the media Barbie-ization of the female form, have a distinctly feminist tone (from her Manifesto: “The Ideal Woman is an agent of change.”) Yet they’re as sexy as they are cheeky – much like her celeb clientele, which includes Sophia Bush, Rosario Dawson, Jen Kirkman and Lena Dunham.

Huddleson Linens

American made, from the finest of Italian linen, Huddleson dresses some of the most glamorous LA tables with an understated but dramatic elegance. Celeb clients include Dianna Agron, Ellen Pompeo and Lisa Vanderpump.

Molly Pepper

For those not charmed by anything too ostentatiously “come hither,” Molly Pepper does sleepwear defined by its more delicate sexiness. The word “bucolic” comes to mind.

PAX Ceramics

Influenced by the un-ornamented cool of Scandinavian and Japanese designs, PAX employs third-generation ceramicists. Dedicated to beauty through simplicity of form, the finished pieces are meant to reference those most soothing elements of nature.

Lulu & Georgia

Purveyors of all things boho and rustic chic – this is where you come to furnish that elegantly shambolic weekend place. A standout is the Juliana Blakely Collection, best paired with a colorful DVF Wrap Dress and a Bat For Lashes soundtrack.
