When Game of Thrones‘ Season 7 ended on August 27, 2017, we were pretty sure that HBO would use the time between then and Season 8’s premiere on April 14 of this year, to send fans into a tailspin of patience-testing suspense. And to be sure, the second teaser for the new season is every bit the riveting enigma.
Because it’s not an actual trailer, one can safely guess that it contains no real footage from Season 8. Rather, it shows Jon Snow, Sansa Stark and Arya Stark passing through a cave together, until they come face to face with statues of themselves – which they then seem to be viewing with some measure of both bafflement and horror. Behind it, we hear cryptic narration by the long deceased Ned Stark: “You are a Stark. You might not have my name, but you have my blood.” Obviously addressing Jon Snow.
Hours of over-analysis probably won’t net any serious clues. But surely the lives of the aforementioned three will be converging in a monumental way – as their individual journeys all along had suggested.
The biggest cultural event of 2019? A thousand times…yes.
