Expert global travel advisors Virtuoso have just released their Luxe Report on trends in travel for the upcoming year of 2020, and there are indeed a few surprises. But the exalted destinations – Italy, Japan, Paris, Rome – have held their positions high up on the popularity lists, while Croatia, surely with a boost from Game of Thrones, has shot up to the top of Emerging Destinations.
The high visitor traffic in places like Barcelona and Florence is starting to drive travelers to more obscure lands, especially those steeped in nature, like Borneo, Oman, and Greenland (which is still not for sale). Exclusive, bespoke – note: proper use of the word “bespoke” – experiences are also on the rise, from private winery tours, to personal shoppers – which as well includes a move away from luxury hotels, to more intimate, localized lodging.
And Gen-Xers, who essentially invented the age of traveling alone, are now gathering friends together for group trips – surely as a way of viscerally reconnecting amidst the crush of busyness that is our technofied modern world existence.
Here are some of the more interesting findings.
