Out of extreme modesty and fear of becoming a celebrity, Swedish singer-songwriter Sia consistently refuses to star in her own music videos. Even live, she had Girls star Lena Dunham perform “Chandelier” in her place on Late Night With Seth Myers. While the multi Grammy-nominated artist originally released her single “Elastic Heart” featuring the Weeknd as a part of the Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack, she’s releasing a new version (sans Weeknd) of the track from her 1000 Forms of Fear LP as a music video starring 12-year-old dancer Maggie Ziegler (also star of the “Chandelier” video) going head-to-head in interpretive dance with Shia LaBeouf. Stuck in a semi-cylindrical, birdcage-like trap, the two are stripped down to dirtied beige rags and a generally fraught state.
Directed by Daniel Askill and Sia herself, the video focuses on the two characters as they playfully quarrel in the cage. If you never thought you’d see Shia LaBeouf wrestling an adolescent girl, then you’ve officially been proven wrong. Ziegler’s character finds a way out of the cage, leading to a very frustrated Labeouf to break down and her through the bars. The tabloid-populating actor has been through a lot in the past few years (including a claimed rape during his #IAMSORRY art piece), and his emotion in this video comes across as strikingly genuine. The visuals and narrative are mesmerizing and emotive, tapping upon themes of entrapment, isolation, and human relations. Watch below.
