It’s been eight years since Gwen Stefani last released a collection of music under her own name, and she promised she’d never do it again. After No Doubt’s highly anticipated recent album failed to produce any big hits, rumors began to swirl about her working on new solo material. After a much speculation, this gossip was confirmed by her label boss a few weeks ago, and now we finally have a taste of what the Hollaback Girl has been cooking up.
“Baby Don’t Lie” sees the 45 year old (if you can believe that’s her real age) in fine form, creating the smart, original pop music that made her a household name. The track is a drum-heavy, almost tribal experience, and the electronic melodies found in the chorus break up the beat and bring the song closer to the sounds we associate Gwen’s solo material with.
Most importantly, Gwen is as fearless as ever, taking risks to push pop music into interesting territory, far from what the other starlets in the Top 40 are doing.
With Ryan Tedder co-writing and Benny Blanco producing, it’s no surprise that “Baby Don’t Lie” is infectious upon first play and gets better with every listen. The song hasn’t officially been released yet, but already a video is in the works with director Sophie Muller, who has worked with Gwen on thirteen videos total—including both her own singles and those with No Doubt—so expect to start hearing “Baby” everywhere you go very soon.
