It sounds like a Raymond Carver story gone wrong, but it’s actually the most ridiculous book-to-movie deal of the century. And that’s really saying something. I spend a lot of time complaining about things like Twitter feeds and computer games being adapted for the big screen, but this time the Hollywood star-makers have really gone too far. Entertainment Weekly reports that Lions Gate Films will be sponsoring the film adaption of What To Expect When You’re Expecting — the classic go-to guide for soon-to-be-parents.
No, What to Expect doesn’t have things like, “plot,” “characters,” and “setting.” But it does have a picture of an attractive pregnant woman on the cover! It also has lots of advice on what to eat and buy while pregnant! What more do you need for a good time at the movies? EW would like to see Jon Hamm star in the film. Personally, I’d like to see Jon Hamm star in a film that’s actually, you know, good. Leave this fluffy shell of a picture for the Duhamels of the world. The real question here is why Lions Gate even bothered to buy the film rights to the book, when they could have just made any old movie about pregnancy for free? But brand recognition goes a long way, and though it pains me to say it, I’m sure there are a lot of parents who will be thrilled to see the film version of a book they’ve actually read.
