SS11 Fashion Week’s First Trend: Transparency

Fashion Week officially kicks off today (although shows and soirees have been in full effect since Wednesday), and already one of the first trends for SS11, transparency, is peeking through. Sheer has been big on the runways for the past few season, but where FW10 was all about sheer bottoms—think Alexander Wang’s see-through black chiffon trousers and his countless copycats—the focus for spring is shifting up. Already Cushnie et Ochs has shown a handful of see-through tops in various prints; Rachel Comey is playing with transparent fabrics with a polka dot top whose robust neckline helps keep the issue of bare breasts at bay. Jen Kao, conversely, left little to the imagination with a number of sheer cropped tops in both cotton and lace.

There will be no letting your body go this winter in anticipation of the trend, but if you’re looking to buy into it now, American Apparel is currently stocking quite a few button-up, long-sleeved see-through tops. And, as I mentioned yesterday, Alexa Chung’s black, transparent Annie blouse for Madewell (also in stores now) is bound to be a hit from her debut design effort.
