Looks like a bleak September is upon us for fashion magazines, and it’s not just for lack of models. The month is regarded as the most important issue of the year for many, and likewise is the largest issue in size. Last year, Vogue produced a September issue that was 840 pages, 725 of which were advertisements. However, for the first time in nearly a decade, this year’s September issue will not best its predecessor; instead, it will carry 50 fewer pages. This speaks to a general decline in ad pages for the fashion industry. For the first two quarters of this year, ad pages were down over 14% at the majors like Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, InStyle, Lucky, etc. For reference, BlackBook’s September issue is currently mapped at 1,216 triple-sided gatefold pages, including 17,024 advertising pages (you read that right) with 14 complimentary CDs, 79 scent packets, and a personal home visit to every subscriber by a desperate BlackBook intern. They do chores!
