Ever since Michelle Obama established herself as a fashion icon in the making while on the campaign trail alongside her husband, the New York fashion community has been desperate to establish a direct link with the American designer-loving First Lady. Not only did Anna Wintour host a fundraiser for the then-Senator Barack Obama last fall, she put Michelle Obama on the cover of Vogue the second Mrs. O agreed. Not to mention IMG maven Fern Mallis did her part in trying to encourage the First Lady to attend this past New York Fashion Week (a invitation that, sadly, wasn’t accepted).
But, now, the CFDA is making a bold call to the First Lady by honoring her with a Board of Directors’ Special Tribute, which begs the question of will she or won’t she attend this year’s ceremony held at Alice Tully Hall on June 15. But perhaps an even more important question: If she attends, who will she wear? Designers being honored for their contributions to womenswear include Marc Jacobs, Narciso Rodriguez, and Rodarte. I, for one, would give anything to see the First Lady decked out in Laura and Kate Mulleavy’s spacetastic collection for Fall 09. For a full list of CFDA nominees, see here.
