Listen: Above & Beyond’s Cover of New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’ is as Visceral as the Original

It wouldn’t be a stretch to refer to New Order‘s “Blue Monday” as something of the “Stairway to Heaven” of post-punk. Enigmatic, visceral, indisputably epic—the two songs share numerous and significant qualities.

One of those qualities is also timelessness…which is why 36 years on from the original, this new version by Brit electronic trio Above & Beyond sounds as relevant as when the song was first recorded. This is especially intriguing, as they don’t try to completely overhaul the electro classic, so much as give it a new energy and context.

Indeed, they leave the iconic beat pretty much as it was, but infuse it with thrillingly tumultuous rise-and-fall dynamics, and add some haunting, trance-y atmospherics. The song’s underlying desperation is also undiminished.

The release coincides with Above & Beyond’s label Anjunabeats celebrating its 20th year in 2020, having impressively survived the radical upheaval of the music business these past two decades.
