Back in 2013, CHVRCHES were the next great Glasgow hope, delivering a debut album – The Bones of What You Believe – that was something of a cross between New Order’s majestic synth melancholy and Lykke Li’s somber but infectious pop.
Yet they’d been somewhat quiet since 2015’s Every Open Eye – and we’d certainly noticed their absence.
But a brand new single has just appeared, and it’s one of the most instantaneous songs they’ve ever recorded. Indeed, bursting with hooks, the lyrics nevertheless seem to align with the current female-led zeitgeist, with Lauren Mayberry definitively expressing her romantic disappointment and exasperation: “Never getting what I wanted / Getting what I needed / I left myself behind.”
Their third album, cheerily titled Love is Dead, will be released later this year. The band will also be returning to New York June 3, to take the stage at Governors Ball.
