She’s Just Being Miley: The Happy Hippie Foundation Launches to Support LGBTQ Youth

Photo: Billy Farrell/BFA.com

Congratulations to Miley Cyrus on her just-launched Happy Hippie foundation which works to fight injustice facing homeless youth, LGBTQ youth and other vulnerable populations. Watch her emotional backyard session with Joan Jett, and make a contribution if you can.

Miley Cyrus has long been an outspoken advocate for being yourself. From dying her armpits pink to swinging ass-naked on her wrecking ball to her debut as a visual artist at the Jeremy Scott show last fall, whatever Miley does, the phrase “she’s just being Miley” echoes.

With her Disney days far behind her, Cyrus is using her voice and her platform (18.8 million Instagram followers) to support those for whom society makes it a little harder to just “be yourself.” With The Happy Hippie Foundation, launched with a partnership with Facebook (47 million likes), Miley will share updates and exclusive Backyard Sessions that encourage viewers to donate.

The first, which you can watch below, features Cyrus and Joan Jett in a duet of Jett’s song “Different,” an appropriate choice for the organization, which aims to “fight injustice facing homeless youth, LGBT youth and other vulnerable populations,” the website states.

In celebration of Cyrus’s commitment to individuality, a look back at all the many ways she’s just being Miley…and looking incredible doing just that.

From Her Dress to HER After-Party, Rihanna Won the Met Ball

Photo: Kevin Mazur/Getty

As though that yellow Guo Pei dress (a near unanimous, if equally-as-meme’d favorite) wasn’t enough to make it clear that Rihanna was the belle of last night’s ball, once the scene migrated from the Met, many headed to RiRi’s very own after party. A-List guests went downtown to Up & Down where RiRi further secured her title as winner of the night. (Not including Anna Wintour).

The party was presented by D’USSE and Armand de Brignac. Guests included Chloë Sevigny, Gabrielle Union, Dwyane Wade, Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Elizabeth Banks, Diddy, Miley, Chrissy Teigen, John Legend, Elizabeth Banks, Keri Russell, Jessica Alba, Usher, Janelle Monae, Jeremy Scott, Hailee Steinfeld, Madonna, Kendall Jenner, and Justin Bieber.

Weekend Trip: Six Romantic Getaways To Book Right Now

Even in the best cities in the world, there are times that escape feels so desperate a necessity that any borrowed friend-of-a-friend’s dilapidated cottage upstate seems like it would do the trick. From dreamy and not-too-far-away to dreamy and across-the-pond, these six romantic getaways are sure to get your imagination, and your heart (and libido) stirring. Book one now. You won’t regret it.

1. Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa, Montauk

Just a quick Jitney trip away lies Montauk–which sheds the pretension of the neighboring Hamptons, but keeps the pristine oceanfront real estate. Thanks to a spa, salt water pool (with ocean views (!)), and yoga classes offered, you can get the perks of a tropically detoxifying retreat in just a 2.5-hour trip. End the night watching the sunset or sipping champagne by the fireplace.

2. Ace Hotel and Swim Club, Palm Springs

For a west coast romantic getaway, look no further than Palm Springs: this desert mecca of mid-century modern architecture doubles as a hip destination for anyone who wants California weather, sans the glitz of L.A…and should you want for just a hint of glitz, The Ace Hotel might just be the perfect resolution. If it’s pure, unadulterated relaxation you seek, “The Feel Good Spa” offers couples packages–in fact, anything from facials and seaweed body wraps, to earth clay wraps and body brushing can be done in twosome form. And, since no vacation has ever felt long enough, couples can indulge in a personal massage lesson to learn inspired, professional techniques to use at home. Outdoorsy types can soak up the SoCal sunshine via bike rentals–even better–the hotel can arrange a private dinner on the stargazing deck, which overlooks the pool and mountains.

Flowers can be added to the room for an extra special touch.

4. The Berkeley Hotel, London

Here’s one for the sartorially inclined couple. If you missed the jaw-dropping Alexander McQueen retrospective when it debuted at the Met’s Costume Instutute in NYC in 2011, fear not–the corsetry, the chance to be thisclose to pieces from the groundbreaking Highland Rape collection is just one reason to head to the UK. It’s now at the V&A–a British institution, if you’ve never been. (Plus, even if you’re going for just an extended weekend, a flight to England is a solid hour less than almost any other country in Europe and the same goes for the time difference). If the exhibit isn’t enough, revel in the quirky spirit of English fashion at The Berkeley Hotel (that’s Rachel Zoe’s favorite to you) where you can enjoy Pret-a-Portea–proper high tea that pays homage to McQueen favorites. Of course, The Berkeley is more than just cookies and tea sandwiches…there are the balcony suites overlooking Hyde Park, duos can enjoy treatments at the Bamford Haybarn Spa, and unwind from the buzz of London by the rooftop pool.

5. St. Regis Bahia Beach, Puerto Rico

Though leaving the premises of the St. Regis Bahia Beach would be, by no means, necessary, the couple who likes their vacation with a healthy mix of the highest-end luxury (think: a Jean-Georges restaurant on the premises) and a bit of authentic culture, look no further than this gorgeous Puerto Rican retreat, where the ocean is warm, the pool is massive and the cabanas are made for making out–but the charm and pastel colors of Old San Juan are just a short drive away. Kayak in the on-property lake, hike holding hands through the nearby El Yunque rainforest, or simply read by the pool, you’ll leave having enjoyed a restorative serving of both piña coladas and Vitamin D. Though adventure on and around the premises abounds, rooms come equipped with sun-drenched patios and walk-in showers. Even better, giant baths that are an insanely simple dial-zero to the butler away from filled with bubbly–in the bath and your glasses. Prepare for 24/7 romance.

6. KiCHIC Resort, Peru

Located on the edge of a traditional Peruvian fishing village, Mancora is fast emerging as one of the world’s best beach destinations (you heard it here first)! KiCHIC offers a unique hideaway where guests find call rooms, located between gardens of coconut palms and maye pepper trees facing the northern ocean breeze, home. For an especially romantic indulgence, spring for the Piedra room which has its own open-air bathtub on a private terrace made out of local flagstone, or the Himalaya. Should you decide (and no judgement, if not) to ever get out of bed, you can take your pick of surf lessons, kayaking, and outdoor movies every weekend.

How to Glow Like Gigi & Kendall: 5 Easy Steps for Perfect, Sun Safe Tanning

Photos: @GigiHadid on Instagram, @KendallJenner on Instagram, @KhloeKardashian on Instagram

Ah, spring. The season of flowers in bloom, of layers coming off, of glowing, bronzed skin. But first, there’s winter’s pallor to contend with… and the notions we all surely have by now to stay healthy and doused in SPF, topped up with a wide brim hat. Still, we could all use some color, and there’s no harm in faking it. The faux pas here would be not properly prepping first. So here we go, your guide to safe tanning.

STEP ONE

Exfoliate

Any excuse to take the extra five minutes to give your skin a nice, exfoliating scrub is a good one. But when it comes to tanning preparation, it’s also a necessary one. Applying self-tanner on anything but the smoothest of skin is what begets those icky streaks–not a good look.

Because self-tanner saturates more intensely in drier areas of skin that are prone to the build up of dead cells (the knees, ankles, feet, elbows, neck), you want to make your body as smooth a surface as possible. “Exfoliate with a washcloth in the shower, or better yet, use a leave-on AHA or BHA exfoliant for consistently soft, smooth skin days in advance,” suggests Bryan Barron, research director for Paula’s Choice Skincare.

STEP TWO

Shave

But Don’t shave right before or after applying self-tanner. Barron explains, “Shaving right before applying self-tanner risks ending up with tiny dots of self-tanner accumulating in the pores (more accurately, hair follicles) of the shaved hairs.” Not pretty, and if your skin ever looks “dotted with color” after self-tanning, this is probably why. “You should also avoid shaving right after applying self-tanner as it will decrease the longevity of your tan color–shaving naturally exfoliates the surface layer of skin,” he says.

STEP THREE

Moisturize

Moisture is key–but only in certain areas. For the best faux tan, begin with clean skin and apply a layer of moisturizer/lotion over just your drier areas, and the common places where dead skin cells tend to accumulate “ankles, knees, heals, and elbows,” Barron says. This layer of moisture helps “to prevent those areas from soaking up more self-tanner than the rest of your body and looking patchy.” “Moisturizing all over can lead to uneven color,” Barron notes, “because you may not apply enough moisture where skin is drier or thicker, causing color to “grab” and develop more intensely there, but look sparse elsewhere.” Some of the products above are especially useful if you have been exposed to the sun and need to give yourself some time to recover before going for the faux-glow. Malie’s mango butter bun is like an in-shower lotion and feels cooling to sunburned skin, and Jurlique’s brand new After Sun lotion is made especially for healing sunburns.

STEP FOUR

Tan

With a body that’s been buffed and scrubbed and covered in lotion, you’re ready to go. A few quick notes about the tricky bits–tanning expert, and the man behind those glam gold-striped tubes, James Read, filled us in on how to look like you soaked up just the right amount of sun. One: “Never apply self-tan directly to feet and hands–always work the excess tan from your legs and arms downwards to avoid build up on the heels, wrists and knuckles,” Read says. Secondly, “the armpits and the bit of skin behind the knees are always tricky areas to tan,” Read says. “ After applying self-tan to your arms and legs, apply a little bit of baby powder to the underarm or behind the knees to soak up excess tan and prevent dark marks.”

STEP FIVE

Tan your face with more tips from Read:

  • Before applying any kind of tanning product to your face, Read says to “rub an ice cube over your face to seal the pores.” This will prevent having some areas hold on to too much color and end up looking “dirty”.
  • To avoid an obvious ‘I-used-a-tanning-product” circle around the hairline, “apply a dab of moisturizer the edges after tanning and work into the hairline for a more natural glow.”
  • Getting it right is in your attention to detail. After applying tanner, “be careful not to drink directly from a cup as this will give you a “white lip”. Make sure to use a straw.
  • Finally, “if you have blonde or light brown eyebrows, dab a tiny bit of Vaseline over them so that you don’t dye them with tanning product.”

Jenny Slate and Retta Want You to Get Tested

Two of our favorite Parks & Rec (pour one out) stars shot a very quick and funny reminder that April is Get Yourself Tested (GYT) Month. So, with six days left, the countdown is on. (Not that you can’t also get tested in May. But seriously, go!)

Regardless of race, gender identity, sexuality, or finances, you can turn to Planned Parenthood by providing affordable, accessible health care. In fact, each year, they provide nearly 4.5 million tests and treatments for sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.

In the name of being educated about why you should  GYT this month, here are three facts about STDs, courtesy of Planned Parenthood. The more you know…

  • STDs impact young people the hardest. There will be an estimated 20 million new sexually transmitted infections this year, half in people under 25 — even though they represent only a quarter of people having sex.
  • If not treated, STDs can lead to serious health problems. Untreated STDs like chlamydia, although easy to cure, make it difficult for about 24,000 women to get pregnant each year.
  • The good news is that all STDs, even HIV, are treatable and most are curable. Early treatment can help prevent serious, lifelong health problems that can result from untreated STDs.

Happy Earth Day! Save Water: Wash Your Face Without It

Photo Credit: “Earth Day – Earth from Space” by TheOriginalSoni

Happy Earth Day!

One–two, sometimes even three times of day we find ourselves using the most water is standing at the sink washing our faces–splashing our faces with cold water to wake ourselves up pre-coffee, and then vigorously scrubbing off a long day’s work, and makeup at night. But maybe it doesn’t have to be this way. There’s a more portable (added bonus) and very eco-friendly school of products we can turn to instead. Meet cleansing water(s)–the product of your dream if you’re trying to conserve water, didn’t have time to shower, prefer to keep your beauty routine on the glam side of lazy (we don’t judge).

Saturday: Check out Stuart Parr’s Collection, the Art of the Italian Two-Wheel

Tomorrow (Saturday,) head uptown for Art of the Italian Two Wheel, hosted by Aby Rosen and Film producer and designer Stuart Parr,  whose incredible collection of never before displayed vintage Italian motorcycles will be in view. The impressive selection hosts 26 of Parr’s classic 1960s and 1970s Italian motorcycles from DucatiMV GustaLaverda, and Magni.

“These bikes represent an era when the greatest design and engineering talent took Italian motorcycles from the race track to the road,” Parr says. Of the unique and special nature of these bikes, the press release notes: “The Stuart Parr Collection centers on some of the most significant classic Italian motorcycles of this era, in particular the MV Agusta four-cylinder. Few production motorcycles enjoy the legacy of the MV Agusta four, which has an engine virtually identical to those racing bikes who won 13 World Manufacturers’ Championships and took victories in 91 Grands Prix. The MV Agusta four’s legacy is The bikes on display are hand-built and forged by artisans, representing a bygone era of motorcycle design and limited production runs. The beauty in these motorcycles is in the myriad of details, wonderful aluminum castings and bespoke design. No two bikes are alike.”

For avid motorcycle fans, the exhibit catalog will prove a useful resource as it’s been written by Ian Falloon, the famed Italian motorcycle historian. “Falloon is the author of seventeen books about Ducati and other Italian motorcycles,” the release notes. Mr. Falloon’s is considered the leading authority on classic Italian motorcycles. His book, The Ducati Story, is considered the standard reference on the bike maker.

How to Do Your Hair for Coachella: 4 Looks from the Experts at Wonderland Beauty Parlor

We all know by now that Coachella fashion (the beauty, the accessories, the clothes, the makeup, the flash tattoos) lives in a category all of its own. Naturally, you need the perfect festival hair to go with! So we asked the experts at Wonderland Beauty Parlor to create four easy to recreate looks for desert-ready hair. Coachella weekend two, here you come.
1Michael Angelo:
Wonderland muse & journalist Brian Moylan wears his long, layered locks air dried with a generous serving of R+Co’s Mannequin and topped with a special edition Jennifer Behr X Wonderland crown of pink enameled roses, created in celebration of Michael Angelo’s Wonderland Beauty Parlor’s 10th anniversary. This simple look works for anyone.

2Siobhan Quinlan:
For perfectly quaffed festival hair Siobhan Quinlan, stylist at Wonderland Beauty Parlor, starts by adding salt spray in dry hair and adding some loose waves with a wand for texture. Then simply gathers some of your hair and tie it in a knot– like you would the end of a balloon. Leave a few pieces out around the face to keep the look soft and pretty.  Final touches include an allover spray of Oribe’s Dry Texture for extra grip and a Jennifer Behr piece for extra sparkle!

3Siobhan Quinlan:
For a bohemian take on  the festival look, begin with wavy hair, sectioned to create 8 small braids- 4 on the bottom hair line and 4 near the crown of your head. Siobhan seals the braids by teasing the ends and spraying with a little hair spray. Then she take each braid and highlights them with Oribe’s Gold Pomade. Next she gathers all the hair into a ponytail and uses one of the braids to wrap around the pony tail holder. The look is completed with an all over spray of Oribe’s Thickening Spray for a little more body and fullness. Throughout the day the gold sparkles of the pomade will catch on other parts of the hair giving a great all over shine. It you get too hot or want a pop of color you can always grab a Jennifer Behr X Wonderland piece and go from pony to messy bun with one easy comb!
