In addition to impeccable fashion sense, and an unceasing devotion to the Gods of Rock & Roll, one thing we could always count on The Kills for was unimpeachable good taste. And so it was that for the B-Side to their recent single “List of Demands,” they chose to cover Peter Tosh’s classic “Steppin’ Razor.”
Now comes this brilliant remix of the track (which BlackBook premieres here), by rising-star Kingston dancehall duo Equiknoxx. Whereas the original cover was all slithery industrial-rock, the reimagined version deepens the reggae groove, and basically morphs it into retro Teutonic synth-pop – which could easily sit beside Man Machine era Kraftwerk. It proves once again, that after 18 years, Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince are never without a new surprise for us.
The Kills play LA’s Regent Theater this Monday, August 13, and Pomona’s Glass House on the 14th, before heading to Omaha for the Maha Music Festival and Denver for Velorama Festival over the weekend. Equiknoxx released their debut album, Colón Man, in 2017.
