BLACKBOOK PREMIERE: EZI’s Impassioned Cover of Berlin’s ‘Take My Breath Away’

It seems only appropriate that a cover of Berlin’s massive 1986 hit “Take My Breath Away” should be released during Valentine’s week. To be sure, it has for 30-plus years since soundtracked many a lover’s swoon, with its ethereal refrain, “Turning and returning / To some secret place inside.”

New pop sensation EZI wasn’t even born when it was first released (she’s just 23). But her version of the song, which BlackBook premieres here, is actually more ethereal and sultry, with a slithery groove and lush atmospherics. Her impassioned, breathy vocal performance literally sends chills.

“The song is a testament to longing and love, both appropriate for Valentine’s Day and the cold, dark months of the winter season. It was inspired by my time in Berlin, Germany working with notable producer Alexis Troy. The cover is our fresh new take on a classic, with modern day production elements that are exemplary of the type of sounds that have inspired my next project.”

EZI, incidentally, starred in the 2016 Nickelodeon series The Other Kingdom (as Esther Zynn), and was the first artist signed to Steve Madden’s 5Towns record label. Last year she released her debut EP Afraid of the Dark on the label, featuring the Billboard Dance charting “DaNcing in a RoOm.”

Expect to hear more from her very talented self sooner than later.
