We love a good juxtaposition.

And indeed, the new single “Bones Break” by LA duo EXES (Allie McDonald and Mike Derenzo) is sonically dreamy, winsome and wistful. Yet the lyrics are deeply pensive and melancholic, with singer McDonald’s raw lyrical confessions rife with a harrowing loss of hope.

Indeed, she starkly professes, “I’d rather feel my bones break / I’d rather feel the cold rain hit my face / I wish you were here to see my dear / How my bones break.”

“For this track, we collaborated with our drummer Peter Martin,” Derenzo explains, “Inspired by the constant movement of the snare drum in Dave Matthews’ ‘Crash Into Me’ (after a viewing of Ladybird) we set out to make a contemporary version of songs we loved as teenagers. Taking in influences from Matthews to Death Cab for Cutie, we tinkered away until we created ‘Bones Break’.”

The song – which BlackBook premieres here – is taken from the EXES‘ upcoming project (they don’t like the word “album”) Before You Go, which is just waiting a release date.
