Bay area singer/songwriter Jay Som (Melina Duterte) today unveils her odd, neon-infused music video for the song ‘One More Time, Please,’ off of her breakout album Everybody Works. In it, she spits out a moth-like sort of creature, paints her hands silver, and draws hairs all over her arms – it’s all behavior due to a rejection of society’s visual expectations of one another.
“We wanted to honor the heaviness of Melina’s lyrics by channeling the essence of madness many feel while attempting to live up to societal standards, behaviors or even personal obsessions,” said directors/writers/producers Christopher Good and Andreina Byrne. “This madness can become mentally and physically enslaving. We follow the main character as she attempts to satisfy these standards/obsessions until she realizes her obsession with such is more of an internalized threat. This realization of her own obsessive state guides her to find her own peace of mind and acceptance of herself.”
Jay Som is currently touring Europe in support of her debut album, and will continue into America this summer, sweeping the festival circuit and headlining shows of her own.
Som said earlier this year: “As a female-identified musician and a queer person, you have people constantly telling you the world isn’t made for you. I think this is a very sensitive time where we should be thinking about people who don’t have as many opportunities as the typical white indie band.”
