An intimate scale and a neighborhoody feel are two great elements for date night. La Vara in Brooklyn has both, along with a fantastic array of Spanish temptations on a menu built for sharing. Step into the cozy space and you’ll find exposed brick and warm candlelight upping the romantic mood. There’s a petite bar in front where you can kick things off with a sangria, or a cocktail that makes use of the house’s awesome sherry reserves. When you reach your table, you’ll find the kitchen has plenty more to intrigue you. House recipes mix Moorish, Spanish, and Sephardic elements, meaning most every dish here has a novel twist. Salt cod gets brightened with vivid splashes of pomegranate and tangerine, while pistachio and olive add earthy aspects, and fragmented egg works as a final refinement. Dinner plates tour you through stuffed rabbit, noodle paella, and lamb meatballs. Spanish classical guitar plays softly on the speakers. For dessert, share a cinnamon-rose custard, accented with grapefruit and rosemary, the flavors evoking a lost time and a distant place. Afterwards, if you need to walk the meal off, the streets of Cobble Hill have rarely been known to impede romance.
