Any hopes that the arrival of 2017 might bring renewal in such contentious times were thwarted last night by a horrible terrorist attack in the city of Istanbul.
A gunman dressed as Santa Claus rained bullets upon a New Year’s celebration at the famous nightclub Reina at approximately 1:15AM – killing 39, and wounding another 70. The popular nightspot, in the city’s Ortaköy district, was known for drawing major celebrities, from Daniel Craig to Kylie Minogue to assorted Turkish football stars. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack, and an intensive manhunt is now underway to capture the killer.
Turkey’s Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu described it as “a massacre, a truly inhuman savagery.” The US State Department also issued a statement saying that it, “strongly condemns the terrorist attack. We stand in solidarity with our NATO ally Turkey in combating the ongoing threat of terrorism.”
It is the seventh major terrorist attack on Turkish soil in the last year.
