Last week I took a quick trip to the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel to experience a night in the spirit of the hotel’s motto, “Live Life To Discover.” The hotel lobby and bar had been transformed into a chic concert venue, buzzing with a young crowd super excited to check out on-the-rise band, St. Lucia. Everything about the evening felt true to the notion of discovery, right down to the decorative lights reading “SEE,” “SHOP,” and “SIP.”
Event guests sipped on drinks by Boston-based Bully Boy Vodka and Harpoon Ale, and nibbled on small bites like duck sliders and polenta fries from M.C. Spiedo Restaurant. Even though my trip barely ventured outside the warmth of the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel, these local favorites gave me a true taste of Boston.
Fresh from an appearance on Seth Meyers, St. Lucia is rapidly gaining fans and acclaim. The band is comprised of South African Brooklynite, Jean-Phillip Grobler, who sings lead and writes songs alongside his four bandmates–one of whom is his wife, Patti Beranek. During this special acoustic set Grobler, shared personal anecdotes and backstories of the band’s best songs. Everyone was instantly charmed as he told the audience stories about Grobler and Beranek’s relationship (the pair met in school while still very young). The songs took us through their journey–their honesty about the hesitation they felt before getting married, and their desire to be sure made clear in the touching lyrics to “All Eyes On You.”

“Closer Than This,” he explained, is not, in fact a love song, as many may think, but an ode to living in the moment, the idea that the present moment is in a sense, the purest one, at all times.” After the set, I got to hang out with the 5 band members for an hour thanks to a VIP ticket courtesy of Renaissance.
After the set, VIP guests were invited to hang out with St.Lucia. We congregated with the band and nibbled on apple cider donut bites and fried pumpkin cheesecake, while we chatted and listened to more of the band’s stories.
