A scrum of designers have been handpicked by the Presidential Inaugural Committee to design items for the Runway for Change Inaugural Collection, a fashion-forward series of handbags and T-shirts created by some of the nation’s most renowned designers. “Heading into the inauguration, we thought it would be a wonderful thing to incorporate the talent of some of these designers in the inaugural celebration,” PIC spokesman Brent Colburn told WWD.
“We reached out to them, and asked them to participate in this collection.” Colburn says the collection has been a proven success and received positive feedback from the designers. “I was hoping this could be a communication tool that would connect people to inspire change,” said Donna Karan, who designed the Urban Zen T-shirt. “It’s everyone’s responsibility to access their resources to call to action.” Adds Zac Posen, “This is the most exciting political moment of my lifetime.”
The collection consists of work from 25 designers and includes handbags designed by Diane Von Furstenberg and Tory Burch, T-shirts designed by Zac Posen, Narciso Rodriguez, Donna Karan, Beyonce, Derek Lam, Rachel Roy, Juicy Couture, and Gerald Matthews, and a scarf designed by Alexander Wang. “These designers have all offered their unique talents and vision to capture the excitement and anticipation around the Inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama,“ said Colburn. If you’re in DC, check out the collection at the Presidential Inaugural Store located at 625 E Street NW, or at the PIC Online Store. Proceeds from the sale of the items will support the costs of the inauguration costs, expected to around $45 million.
